Description	:	Burke was born in Vancouver, Washington, and graduated in 1950 from Evergreen High School where he was class president. He attended Oregon State University and competed on the swim team. Before graduation, Burke enlisted in the Navy Seabees, a special unit of highly skilled construction workers who could build anything, anywhere under any conditions as well as be soldiers, when necessary. He attended Oregon State University and competed on the swim team. Before graduation, Burke enlisted in the Navy Seabees, a special unit of highly skilled construction workers who could build anything, anywhere under any conditions as well as be soldiers, when necessary. During the Korean War, he helped build the U.S. military airbase at Subic Bay, Philippines. He also boxed for the Navy and won 2nd place in the Lightweight division. Burke was a Worthy Master of the Twin Falls Masonic Lodge, NO. 180, in Amboy, Washington, and received a 50-year pin for his services. After his military discharge, Burke returned to Amboy and became a lumberjack. He met and fell in love with a lovely young woman, Estella Emerick, who worked in the local hardware store. They married in 1956. Burke and Estella had three children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Burke was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and big game hunter. He displayed stunning big game head mounts in the den that he built onto his and Estella’s home on Chelatchie Prairie (Amboy, WA). Burke and Estella were avid members of the Timber Toppers square dance club. They were also involved in the creation of the first annual Amboy Territorial Days logging competition and fair that began in 1960. It held a sawing contest that evolved into an international logging competition in which Burke participated until he could no longer compete with his sons, but he gave them a good run for their money! Burke had won the title “All-Around Logger” on more than one occasion. He was a timber faller for nearly fifty years, became a Southwest Washington logging legend and was honored with the title “Bull of the Woods” in 2012. After the untimely death of his beloved wife, Estella, he married Gayle Baker. They moved to Idaho when he retired from logging. Burke and Gayle were married for twenty-nine years. Burke’s grandparents and biological father Joseph immigrated to America from Yanow, Russia (now part of Poland). He is survived by his wife, daughter two sons and all the grand- and great-grandchildren and one half-brother. His sister, half-sister and half brother are deceased.
