Byrdena Marie Dirks was born June 1, 1906, near Langworthy, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary Wilken Dirks. She was baptized July 7, 1906 and confirmed March 28, 1920, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. Byrdena received her education in the rural schools near her home. She was salutatorian of the class of 1925, the first graduating class of the newly constructed high school Byrdena M. Dirks and Harm Wilhelm Gerhart Folkers were married Sept. 30, 1925, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. The couple farmed near Scotch Grove on the Folkers family farm, retiring from active farming in 1990. Byrdena was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello. She also was an active supporter of The Monticello High School Band Parents and a member of the Federated Garden Club. She had recently established the Byrdena Folkers Scholarship Fund.
