The days of his years were 77 years, 12 months, and 15 days. John Henrich Dirks was born on July 30, 1873, in Scotch Grove, Iowa. He was the son of Henry M. and Marie Hoefing Dirks. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong member of Wayne Zion Ev. Lutheran Church. He also attended the rural schools in Jones County. Having chosen farming to be his life's vocation, he made a success of his calling for he was an industrious and zealous worker. Mr. Dirks was a respected citizen of his community. He was one of the first presidents of the Langworthy Creamery Co. Honest and sincere he was also kind and considerate to his wife and a loving and good father to his children and grandchildren. On December 19 1899, he was united in marriage to Maria S. Wilken by Pastor C. Mardorf. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union: Carl Henry and Edmund Herman of Langworthy, and Louise, Mrs. John H. Weers, and Byrdena, Mrs. H.W.G. Folkers of Scotch Grove. On December 19 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Dirks observed their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary in the midst of their children and friends. They lived on their farm near Langworthy since their marriage until three years ago when they moved to the village of Langworthy, Surviving him are his wife, his four children, eight grandchildren, one brother Henry M. Dirks of Anamosa; two sisters Mrs. Wm Folkerts and Mrs. Fred Hults, both of Anamosa; and many other relatives, neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 21, at 1:15 p.m. at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello and at 2:00 p.m. at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. F.H. Kehren officiating.
