Death came as a result of double pneumonia. Last Wednesday Mr. Roberts conducted his classes at the local high school In apparent good health. During the night he was taken ill with severe pains in his chest. His condition grew steadily worse until Sunday when it became necessary for the attending physician to administer oxygen in an effort to save his life. The doctor and nurse were by his side constantly throughout the night endeavoring to do all that possibly could be done. Friends and members of the family kept vigil along with the doctor hoping against hope that he would recover. At 6 o'clock Tuesday morning Byron was able to recognize members of his family, the first time in several hours. Until 11 o'clock the family had hopes that the crisis had been passed safely. From then on he rapidly sank into a coma passing away at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Roberts was born March 20, 1905, at Tabor, Iowa, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roberts, to Lamoni when three years of age. He attended school, graduated from high school in 1922, and attended Graceland College for the next three years. In 1926 he received his degree from the State University of Iowa. During the years of 1927 and 1928, he was a teacher in the public schools of Joliet Mont., coming to Lamoni as a member of the high school faculty in 1929. During the years he acted as an instructor here he became recognized as one of the most successful teachers Lamoni students had been privileged to have. The student body respected Mr. Roberts and thought well of the things that were said and accomplished by him. In 1930 he was married to Miss Ruth Walden and for three years they both were engaged in teaching. Their son, Kay Walden, was born July 1, 1934. Besides his wife and child, Mr. Roberts is survived by his mother, Mrs. Clare Roberts, his brother Forest, and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Hausheer and Mrs. David Blair. His father, Joseph Roberts, departed this life when Byron was a boy 11 years of age. The death of Mr. Roberts brings an irrevocable loss in the community, the school Iife, and the church circle. Although he was only a young man of 30, his influence had been felt throughout the educational system of Lamoni. As a student at Graceland and a member of the high school faculty, he left an impression on all of the students he came in contact with. As a promising young businessman, his judgment came to be relied upon and his advice sought by people far older in years than he. Mr. Roberts was a member of the board of directors of the Lamoni Cooperative Creamery, Farmers Cooperative Grain And Seed Company, member of the Decatur County National Farm Loan Association, a unit of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, and a member of the city council. His activities in the church began when he was but a youth. He was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in October 1913, ordained a priest on November 4, 1928, and to the office of elder July 29, 1934. At this time he was also set apart as councilor to the Lamont Stake Bishopric. Morally he was a guide to youth, spiritually he was an encouragement to adults. and financially he represented sound judgment in the business world. The life lived and the things accomplished in the 30 years that Mr. Roberts lived are not often equaled by the average person. He lived well, accomplished much, and will be missed by the entire community. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Coliseum.
