Read More	BISHOP JOSEPH ROBERTS Born January 25, 1873; Died July 14, 1916 The [Reorganized] Latter Day Saint Bishop of Lamoni Stake, Elder Joseph Roberts, who has been suffering at his home in Lamoni for the past two months because of a large cancer of the bowel, was permitted to pass from this life on the 14th of July, at four o'clock in the afternoon. He was at the time surrounded by his immediate family, consisting of his wife and two daughters and two sons, his niece Miss Stella Roberts, who had been nursing him for a short time, and a few of his most intimate friends, and Dr. B. A. Greer. His end was peaceful, not-withstanding the fact that he had been compelled to undergo very great suffering for several weeks, and he retained consciousness until a very short time before death came. Joseph Roberts was born in Fremont county, Iowa, January 25, 1873, and was one of a family of twelve children. His mother still lives at Tabor, Iowa, and is at present eighty-four years of age. The following are the brothers according to their ages: William D., Walter S., Charles M., Samuel J., James. V., and Paul; sisters, Liza Jane Moore, Flora B. Grove, Anna Greenlee, Carlotta, and Sally May Roberts, the latter being the wife of Edward Roberts recently moved to the vicinity of Lamoni. Joseph's passing away marked the first break in the family of children for many years, all except one, we believe, having reached the years of maturity. Bishop Joseph Roberts moved to La-moni in the year 1908, purchasing a small farm on the edge of town, and he has been considered a public-spirited and helpful man from the start. He was active in his church, having been an officer therein for many years, and soon after coming to Lamoni was chosen to work as counselor to Bishop William Anderson, who deceased in March 1911. After his demise, Joseph Roberts was chosen to act in the vacant office, being ordained to the office of bishop in April 1911, and after that chosen to act as bishop of Lamoni Stake, where he has occupied since, till the time of his departure. Bishop Roberts' family consists of his wife, who was Clara Badham, and whom he married on December 25, 1898; his daughters Christine and Melba, aged seventeen and eight years; his sons, Forest and Byron, aged fourteen and eleven years. He has left to them a good name and their home, all that could have been expected of a man who gave so much of his time to the church and to public affairs, from which he could not expect to receive remuneration in this life. To say that Bishop Roberts is highly respected does not do justice to him—one can say that he was regarded as a friend by all who really knew the man, and were engaged in good works. He was more especially the friend of the poor and the needy, given to be over-accommodating in many ways, valued as a neighbor, loving and indulgent, candid and straightforward to a marked degree.
