Caleb Stock, aged 84 years died Friday Aug. 23, 1912 at his home in Mitchell of the results of paralysis. he had been in poor health for some time. He was born in Somersetshire England, in 1828. he snipped to America in 1848 and came to the wilds of Racine county, Wis. In November 1851 he went by way of New York and the Nicaraugua route to San Francisco on account of the California gold fever. He worked in a flour mill in Sacramento for a while. He returned to Wisconsin in 1856. In early June he came to Mower County. Austin had then only a few log houses. The Watkins family arrived at Cedar City at the same time. They built their first log house at Cedar City Aug. 24 1856. Mr. Stock and Miss Mary Watkins were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Watkins at Cedar City. Squire Sylvester Smith of Austin officiated. David Watkins and Miss Damy Phelps stood up with the couple. After living at Cedar City a few years Mr. and Mrs. Stock moved to Mitchell, Iowa, where they have lived for over half a century. Seven children were born to them only one of them, Mrs. William G. Smith living. Mrs. Stock survives. Funeral services were held on the lawn at the old home in Mitchell Monday afternoon. Those attending from Austin were Mr. and Mrs. Abe Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. E. Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Watkins, John Watkins and Mrs. Myra Watkins-Gregg. Mr. Stock died on Friday and his 56th wedding anniversary would have been on the next day, Saturday. Many of our readers will remember the delightful golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Stock which was held in Lafayette park, Austin, six years ago.
