Read More	Garden County News (Oshkosh, Nebraska), Jul. 2, 1931, Page 1 Calhoun McCormick After an illness that kept him confined to the hospital in Omaha for some days, Calhoun McCormick passed away last Thursday. His death was not unexpected as it had been known for some time by his family and intimate friends that he could not long withstand the inroads of his aliments, but the passing of a good man, a pioneer and builder, is a shock to any community. Mr. McCormick was so widely known, so highly esteemed by so many people that a whole community was shocked at the news that came to them. Mr. McCormick was born on January 25th, 1856, at Drumquin, County of Tyrone, Ireland, and passed away in the Methodist Hospital in Omaha at noon, Thursday, June 25th, sojourning in this world seventy-five years and five months. Mr. McCormick came to the United States in 1874, settling in California where he spent three years of his young manhood, then returned to his native Ireland for a visit and while there married Ann Hemphill in 1880, who passed away about thirty-four years ago. Mr. McCormick returned to the United States in 1880 with his wife, settling at Crete. In 1886 a homestead was taken up on the south table, thus making him one of the first pioneers to brave the hardships of this new country, and about 1894, he took up his late home northeast of Lewellen, where he resided until his death. On July 19th, 1899 he was united in marriage to Sadie Cheney at Fremont, Nebraska. His widow, Mrs. Sadie McCormick, survives him as well as six children, John, Kenneth, Mrs. Ann McGill, Gladys, of Lewellen, Mrs. Frances Nelson, Chicago, and Mrs. Frederica Parker, North Platte. Mamie, James, Edwin, Robert and Rachel preceded their father in death by several years. Besides his own immediate family the following brothers and sisters are left to mourn his departure from this world: Robert, of Big Springs, Tom of Lewellen, Willie, Mrs. Maggie Gordon and Mrs. Elva McCaskey of Ireland. Mr. McCormick was converted when a boy and joined the Wesleyan Methodist church over sixty years ago, and has been a faithful and loyal officer and member of the Methodist church all of his life and held this membership until his death. Whenever or wherever he made his home, his membership in the church was moved and last fall when he again took up his residence on the old home place, he immediately asked the local pastor to send for his letter from the First Methodist Church, Lincoln, where he had been during his sojourn in that city. After a fine and useful life of more than the three score and ten years allotted to man by scripture, this faithful, loyal solder of the cross has laid down his implements of warfare and has gone to await the coming of his devoted wife, six children, four grandchildren and a multitude of relatives and friends and neighbors who loved him and will miss the stalwart Christian gentleman from their midst. His sterling character will always be a happy memory and an incentive to carry on the battle which his hands have laid down. The funeral service was held Saturday morning, June 27th, at ten o'clock, from the Methodist church in Lewellen, with Rev. A. O. Kenyon, pastor of "The Friendly Church" officiating, and burial was made in the family plot in Ash Hollow cemetery. The entire community gathered to show their esteem for the departed, and in sincere sympathy for the bereaved relatives. A long procession marked the road to the Ash Hollow cemetery and genuine grief was evident on the faces of those who had been neighbors and friends of the family for many years.
