I've taken her birth date from "Chapman Genealogy", p 33, posted online at Ancestry with a Family Tree. MARRIAGES Calista was married twice: 1. Judson Newell: married 26 April 1838 in Ashtabula County, Ohio 2. Ezra Rickard: no marriage record found, but likely married sometime in the 1850's in Ohio based on his first wife's tax records in Cuyahoga County which begin in the early 1850's (meaning she and Ezra had separated by then). I first found Calista during a search for Mary Matilda Newell who married Byron Rickard as Byron is a son of my 3X Great Grandparents. (I believe Ezra is related to Byron's father but so far have not found a record to document that.) Mary Matilda Rickard was 12 years old living with Ezra and Calista Rickard in Cleveland Ohio. It was a few weeks later that I found Mary Matilda's obituary and it gave her parents' names as Judson and Calista Newell. I remembered Calista's name from the 1860 Census and that helped me connect her to both Judson Newell and Ezra Rickard. I still don't know, and likely never will, why Calista and Judson separated sometime in the 1850's. Judson moved to Illinois and was a boarder in the Home of Levi Daniels, 38, born New York. Judson served in the Civil War for 3 years from records I found and died at the end of 1865; I suspect he died of injuries or illness incurred in the War. CALISTA 1850 FORWARD 1850 CENSUS This Census, being the first to document the names of all members of households. provided the earliest record I found for Calista after her marriage to Judson Newell. The family is living in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio where Judson is farming: Judson Newell, age 34, born Ohio Calista Newell, age 32, born New York Harriet Newell, age 11, born Ohio Lesley C Newell, age 9, born Ohio Emelinda J Newell, age 5, born Ohio Mary M Newell, age 2, born Ohio I've found all 4 of Calista and Judson's children thru the years as well as their FAG memorials and hopefully all 4 will be linked to Calista shortly. 1860 CENSUS This Census documents the separation of Calista and Judson. Calista is now married to Ezra C Rickard and living in Crawford County, Pennsylvania which is just across the state border of Ohio and Pennsylvania from Ashtabula County. The youngest daughter of Calista and Judson is living with Calista and Ezra; Ezra is called a Master Chair Maker. Ezra C Rickard, age 42, born New York Calista Rickard, age 41, born New York Mary M Rickard, age 12, born Ohio 1870 CENSUS Calista and Ezra are now living in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County. Mary Matilda has left home as she married Byron Rickard in 1868. However, there is a young child in the household: Ezra C Rickard, age 52, born New York Calista Rickard, age 50, born New York Gertrude Morley, age 2, born Ohio It took me awhile to determine how Gertrude was connected to Ezra and Calista. Based on her Death Certificate, Gertrude was the daughter of Emma Rickard and Richard Morley. I could not find the father despite his birth in England being less common than in Ohio. However, I finally came to realize Emma Rickard was Calista's daughter, called Emelinda in the 1850 Census. Ezra was now employed in a mill rather than working as an independent chair maker. 1880 CENSUS Calista and Ezra are now living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, 2 counties west of Ashtabula County. E C Rickard, age 60, born New York (parents' birth places blank) C Y Rickard, age 59, born New York (parents born New York) Also documented in their home are 5 lodgers; I see no family connections but have documented their names on Ezra's memorial. Ezra is back to being a chair-maker; perhaps that was his preference or no other employment opportunity of interest to him in Cleveland. CALISTA'S DEATH After the 1880 Census the next Census available to researchers is the 1900 Census. Since Calista was already 59 in 1880, I was not surprised not to find her in the 1900 Census despite extensive searching. One clue to the date of her death is from Ezra's obituary. Ezra died in September 1892 and the obituary notes that he died in Findlay, Ohio on a trip to visit Byron and Mary Matilda Rickard with his wife. So we know Calista was still alive in late 1892. I've seen one Crosby Family Tree on Ancestry that gives a death date for Calista of 2 Aug 1897 in Ashtabula County, Ohio. This fits with the time range between late 1892 and 1900. More recently, I've been provided with data from Calista's (and other Crosby family members buried in this cemetery) burial record ("Chestnut Grove Record Book, page 128") which only gives a year of death, but it is 1897. So I am using the full date found in Ancestry Tree as the date Calista died. CALISTA'S BURIAL Finding where Calista was buried was not straightforward as I assumed any record of her burial would be recorded as Calista Rickard. However, after finding no such record, I found Calista Crosby buried in Chestnut Grove Cemetery with no dates for her birth or death. After additional searching, I discovered her parents were also buried in Chestnut Grove. It seemed very likely Calista was buried near her parents. I contacted the man who created Calista's memorial and discovered he also created those for her parents and siblings (he surveyed the entire cemetery and uploaded those records to FAG). He has since confirmed Calsita's name was on the same stone as her parents and her 2 siblings. At this point I decided to see if someone would respond to a Photo Request on the chance there was a marker for Calista. I had a wonderful researcher respond immediately to my Request with not only the photos you see, but the burial records of all 10 persons buried in the Crosby plot which provided names, grave numbers, and years of death.
