The following biography was written by Eva Lippard for the Sigourney, Iowa paper about 1915. Calvin was living with Eva at the time, and she wrote from the words of his own mouth: "Calvin Lippard was born in Decatur County, Indiana in the year of 1821, May 30, and in the year of 1826 moved with his parents to Morgan County, Indiana. (On) Oct.16, 1842 (he) married Levicy Hasty and started directly for Iowa over land with a team, coming to Burlington, Iowa. He had to lay over three weeks for the river to freeze over so he could cross the ice. "On Dec. 19, 1842 he landed in Washington County, Iowa and took a claim on 80 acres of land and in 1847 he moved to Keokuk County, Iowa where he has lived ever since. He cast his first vote for General Harrison in Springfield, Illinois, a Whig ticket, but has voted Democrat ticket ever since, never missing an election. "He drove an ox team from Washington County to this county where What Cheer now stands in 1844, and dug a load of coal out of the creek bank with pitch and ax and hauled it to Washington County for a blacksmith. "He is the father of nine children, eight of whom are living. He has 35 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, making five generations and 94 years between his birth and the younger great-great-grandchildren. His faithful wife died March 29, 1901 and he has made his home with his son Charley ever since. He now resides in Springfield. "Uncle Calvin, as we all call him, never used intoxicating liquor or tobacco in any form. There were but few men that could equal him in strength. He is a well-preserved old man and has a possibility of reaching 100 years. Uncle Calvin was 21 years old when he saw the first cook stove. He can relate many trials and woes of the hardships of the pioneer settlers of this county. It is quite interesting to hear this old gentleman talk." Eva Lippard also wrote the following essay for school about 1915: "In 1826 (Calvin Lippard) moved with his parents to Morgan County, Indiana, in a large covered wagon with four horses. (After a) distance of about 65 miles, they crossed a large main river, (and) had to cut the ice and then ferry across it in the larger boat. "They reached there one morning and unloaded right by a road and laid logs together and made a house, covered it over with their tent and lived there for a week. A man by the name of Howe came to his folks and said they must build a house. This was in the morning, so they called hands and cut the logs and made the house the same day. Howe and his father were both members of the church and they had no church in those days - so they held church in their house. When Calvin was nine* years of age, his father died** and left him and his brother John to do the work. John drove the horse and Calvin rode it." Age does not agree with records. * "One day at 10:00 my father was working in timber, took a pain in his side, and at 10:00 the next day he died. He was about 45 years of age, left six children and a wife." (Calvin speaking of his own father, William) In 1860, Calvin is found on the 1860 Van Buren Twp., Keokuk County, IA census, living next to Phillip McNabb's family (son of John) and John and Jane McNabb (Sherry's 3rd great-grandparents). In 1885(?) he is listed as a Grand Juror for the District Court in Keokuk County, IA. Methodist Church records show that Calvin and his wife received in membership on Sep.15, 1900. In 1912, his brother-in-law, Charles Carter Hasty wrote a letter to Calvin and stated: "The 80 (acres) you owned here (Kalona) where you lived would sell today quick for $200 per acre. It's one of the finest homes in our neighborhood." In 1980, Ruby Noller Ragan wrote to Ronald Lippard: "We have a heritage to be proud of. In my family reserach I have found only men and women of integrity - good citizens. I remember going to prayer meetings in Delta with Grandma and Grandpa Hewitt and seeing both of them stand up to testify and Grandpa Calvin was there too, sometimes. And when he with his white hair and frail body stood up to tell what the Lord had done for him, the sanctuary was absolutley quiet. It made quite an impression on a young girl." Calvin used to help his daughter-in-law, Lillian Porter Lippard, in her garden. He told Dorothy Mowery when he was 90, that if he could see, he would go hoe in the garden, but he couldn't see. "He was a bigger man than his son Charles, and was handsome. He had beautiful snow white hair." Notes by (Aunt) Eva Lippard Hemsley indicate that Calvin sold part of his land near Kalona, IA to get money so that his wife Lavicy could return to Indiana to visit when she was homesick. Calvin lived with his son Charles for 17 years. His son, Henry, bought Calvin's home. This is where Calvin died, south of Sigourney, where he had gone to spend the winter (per Eva Lippard Hemsley). His death record says he was 95 years, 7 months, 18 days. The cause of death was nephritis, orchitis, complicated with old age. The physician was W. E. Eastburn. Informant was H. T.
