Read More	Obituary Bryan Democrat - January 25, 1916 Surnames: Mavis, Martin Calvin Mavis was born in Farmer township, Defiance county, Ohio, June 18, 1847, and departed this life December 23, 1915, at the home of his daughter in Darraugh, Mich., Kalkaska county. On January 1, 1870, he was united in marriage with Anna Mariah Martin, and to this union were born 12 children, five of whom preceded him to the other shore; two sons who died in infancy and another who died in 1912; two daughters, one who died in 1895 and the other but a few months gone from us. Only a few days after the beloved son passed away in 1912, mother was called to join him, and no one can realize the loneliness and heartaches their departure gave this loving father and husband. The place which had been their home for so many years was broken, never again to be home to him, but through all his troubles and sorrows he was ever cheerful, trying to help others to bear their burdens bravely and cheerfully. The deceased was for three years a patient sufferer of rheumatism, although in every other way he was in good health, until on November 6, while visiting his children in Detroit, he was taken ill with indigestion, from which he suffered for nearly a week. A few weeks after his recovery he left Detroit to visit his daughter and family at Darraugh, Mich. The day of his arrival there, he was again attacked by the same disease, acute indigestion, and suffered even more than before, although in a few days he seemingly had recovered. On December 21, he was again taken seriously ill with a complication of the disease which he suffered with patience unlimited, while the best endeavors of human power were exercised to save his life, nothing could be done to prevent fatality. His greatest desire was to join the loved ones who had gone before and he was willing and ready when his Maker called him home, and at about 4 p.m. Thursday, December 23, he passed into sleep that knows no awakening. At all times through the joys and sorrow of his busy life, he was a loyal, faithful husband, patiently bearing his share of the burdens of life. Always a true, self-sacrificing father, ever willing to sacrifice his pleasures and comforts for his family, and ready at all times to lend a helping hand, always a free giver to any cause that might come to his attention. He leaves to mourn their loss, seven daughters, 12 grandchildren, one brother and a large number of near relatives and many friends and neighbors. Although another has gone from our family circle,whose tender care we shall always miss, his loving kindness to us, through all the years of his busy life has again brought to our hearts the lesson to honor old age and silvery hairs and the many lessons taught us by his character will never be forgotten.
