Description	:	Captain Alfred Cooley Alder USNR Retired, 98, of Elizabethtown, PA, and formerly of Volin, South Dakota, passed away Thursday April 30, 2015 at Cedar Haven Nursing Home in Lebanon with his daughter by his side. Read More	Captain Alfred Cooley Alder USNR Retired, 98, of Elizabethtown, PA, and formerly of Volin, South Dakota, passed away Thursday April 30, 2015 at Cedar Haven Nursing Home in Lebanon with his daughter by his side. He was the husband of the late Helen (Jones) Alder for 58 years who passed away in 2005. Alfred was born in Yankton, South Dakota on March 24, 1917. He was a son of the late Charles Ephriam and Nellie Mary (Cooley) Alder. Alfred had a Naval career of 24 years which began after attending two years at the University of South Dakota where he enrolled in R.O.T.C. He enlisted as a Naval Aviator in August of 1942 and attended Flight School in Pensacola, Florida where he was awarded his "Wings of Gold" in November of 1942. He reported to active duty on January 7, 1943. He had trained in the Steermen N2S as well as the SNV, SNJ, and the SNB Twin Engine Beechcraft. He became a Plane Commander for the PB4Y-2. He had many overseas duty stations including Okinawa, Guam and Hawaii. His wife was able to accompany him on these island bases for an incredible and exciting beginning to their marriage. After retirement, Alfred returned to the family farm at Volin, South Dakota and finished raising the family with Helen. He and Helen then retired again to Silver City, New Mexico and later made their way to PA to be near their daughter and resided in their Elizabethtown home until December 30, 2014. Alfred 's hobbies were carpentry, hunting, and gardening. Alfred was a member of Quentin United Church of Christ. As a young boy, he was a member of the Methodist Church and was involved in Sunday School and was a very active member in the Boy Scouts of America. Alfred loved the Lord, his family, and his dedicated and loving caregivers (Linda, Sue and Mare) and his country. Alfred will be missed but is in his Heavenly Home at peace. He is survived by 2 children - his son, Craig Alfred Alder, husband of Cathy, of Elk Grove, CA and his daughter, Kim Alder Bade, wife of Steve, of Lebanon. He also has many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles "Jim" Worth Alder. Funeral services will be held at 7 PM on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Quentin United Church of Christ 11 E. Main St. Quentin, PA with viewing hours from 6-7 PM at the church. Pastor Jacquelyn Lingelbach will be officiating. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. is entrusted with arrangements.
