Azariah Somers had lived such a life and had lived it so long in this city that his departure was bound to leave a very conscious vacancy, among its citizens. For many years he was not only a familiar figure at the shipyard where he served so earnestly and usefully but, when Sunday came the pastor of Mt. Pleasant M. P. Church felt that something was wrong if he and his faithful wife were not in their accustomed place. Mr. Somers was deeply interested in the welfare of Crisfield in every sense of the word. During the last year or two of his life when his health had failed and he could no longer go about he would always express the deepest interest in the condition and needs of the town. He was a genuinely public spirited man. With him the church and religion came before other things and in his declining days his faith did not fail and when the end came he was truly "Soothed and sustained by an unfaltering trust and approached the grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams". The funeral service was conducted in the home by Rev. J. L. Nichols, his pastor, assisted by Rev. J. J. Bunting, pastor of Immanuel M. E. Church. His body now rests in Crisfield cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Somers and one daughter, Mrs. Hubbard Daugherty. The Crisfield Times, November 1927 pg.1
