Description	:	David Gidley Howland 79, died March 14, 2010. He was born June 2, 1930, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, son of Merrill Carr and Alice Gidley Howland. He graduated from Dartmouth High School, Class of 1948, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Class of 1953. During his 23-year Coast Guard career, he served on eight different ships. He commanded a 95-foot patrol boat in Alaska, the buoy tender Lilac, in New Jersey and the cutter, Campbell, in Maine. Read More	David Gidley Howland 79, died March 14, 2010. He was born June 2, 1930, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, son of Merrill Carr and Alice Gidley Howland. He graduated from Dartmouth High School, Class of 1948, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Class of 1953. During his 23-year Coast Guard career, he served on eight different ships. He commanded a 95-foot patrol boat in Alaska, the buoy tender Lilac, in New Jersey and the cutter, Campbell, in Maine. Before his retirement in 1976 he was commanding officer of Group Southwest Harbor. After he retired he enjoyed many activities, including digging quahogs, blacksmithing, scuba diving, home brewing, reading and many other intellectual pursuits. He volunteered for Boy Scouts of America, participating for many years in Eagle Scout Boards of Review. He particularly enjoyed swapping stories with his friends at Hulls Cove General Store. He was a volunteer at Jesup Memorial Library from 1989 to 2009, where he organized, sorted and priced books for the annual book sale. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Nancy Draycott Howland; two children; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister, Joan Bernard. He was predeceased by his brother, Barry Carr Howland. There will be a private family remembrance later in the spring.
