Read More	Gordon Emerson Romkey 2007 Halifax Chronicle Herald (From thecollection of Charlene Veinotte) "Gordon" Emerson Romkey, Jr., Captain (Ret'd) WNSR, passed away March 17, 2007, at the age of 85, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in West Dublin, he was the son of the late Gordon E. and Elsie (Slater) Romkey. He joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment and was stationed in Camp Aldershot where he met and married the love of his life, E. Shirley Crosby, on April 6, 1942. Gordon was in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy before being wounded and sent to England for treatment. After the war, he worked for his father at G.E. Romkey and Company and then joined the Department of Fisheries as an inspection officer in Canso and Halifax. He and Shirley retired to Crescent Beach in the 1970's. He was active in St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church, the Royal Canadian Legion (life member of Branch 24), the West Nova Scotia Regimental Association and his community. He loved to talk with the young people about the value and importance of Remembrance Day and enjoyed the cards and letters that he received after their information session. He spent many hours gathering information about his fallen comrades during the Second World War which he compiled in the book "Our Glorious Dead." He is survived by his wife, Shirley, Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg; son, Gordon III (Cheryl); daughter, Sheila (Neil) Chambers; sister, France Romkey, Crescent Beach. He was "Boppy" to Charmaine (Wayne Mosher), James (Bonnie) and Raymond Romkey, Jennifer (Brian Ste-Croix) and Tom (Jodi) Chambers, and his great-grandchildren, Jacob, Andrew, Michael Mosher, Mariah and Brennan Larsen, Ashley and Kevin Ste-Croix, Joshua, Jonah, and Jaetta Chambers. He was predeceaased by sisters, Margaret and Lillian Romkey. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew's Presbyterain Church, West Dublin, Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Private family burial will be in the Romkey Cemetery, Crescent Beach. No flowers or visitation by request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
