James Kelley died after a prolonged illness at his home five miles north of Newton a few minutes after 4 o'clock last Saturday morning. Capt. James Kelley was born in Indiana November 6, 1839 being 57 years old at the time of his death. He was the son of John B and Jane (Ford) Kelley. Capt. Kelley's father was a dealer in stock. In 1837 he visited Iowa and again in 1846, when he settled in Cedar County, where he died of cancer July 15, 1867. Mr. Kelley's mothers father, Francis Ford, also a dealer of stock, was of Scottish origin and a native of Ohio, but afterward of Iowa. Capt. Kelley is the oldest of a family consisting of four sons and four daughters. Nancy is the wife of Cornelius Van Zandt of Wilton, Iowa; William is in the stock business of South Omaha; Mary is the wife of B L Tower of Storm Lake; Charles is a resident of Des Moines; Lucy J is the wife of M W Klotz of Columbus Junction; John B is a stock dealer of Colfax; and Florence who died while in infancy. On the 21st of Sept. 1861, Capt. Kelley enlisted in Co. D Eleventh Iowa Infantry as a private and in November was sent to Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis then to Jefferson City, Mo. This company was stationed at Fulton, Mo. on guard duty until March 1862. At that time the company was sent into Tennessee, where Mr. Kelley participated in the battles of Pittsburgh Landing and Shiloh and for meritorious conduct was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Later he took part in the siege of Corinth, the battles of Iuka and Corinth and the siege of Vicksburg. Re-enlisting as a veteran in the winter of 1863-64, Mr. Kelley was present at the fall of Atlanta and accompanied Sherman on his march to the sea. October 27, 1864, he was promoted to Captain of his company. After serving until the last gun was fired, he mustered out July 15, 1865. He was never wounded nor was he ever sick or off duty during his long service. Capt. Kelley started in life a poor boy but by due attention to his business and excellent judgement, accumulated a handsome property. He has never been sick before his last illness. The day before Xmas, he caught a severe cold which was followed by la grippe and neuralgia. He leaves a devoted wife (Laura Heywood Kelley) and family. He resided in Jasper County 22 years. Capt. John Kelley and Mrs. Mary Tower remained with him to the end. James and Laura were the parents of William, George, Jessie, Bessie, Jennie, Nellie, Florence, and Dot Kelley.
