Lewis Lee Layton, on of the old and useful residents of this place, was critically ill, and for some days all hope of his recovery has been abandoned by those who kept silent & sorrowing at his bedside.T he end came Wednesday afternoon at 4:25 o'clock, when death called and beckoned the spirit of Lewis L. Layton to follow and cross the river that separates eternity from all that is mortal. The good man was ready to go, since he had performed well his duty as a good citizen, a devoted father and an affectionate husband. Lewis Lee Layton was born in the county of Middlesex in the year 1829. He came to Fredericksburg when a child and continued to make it his home up to the day of his death. The deceased was for a time in the engineering department of the Confederacy, and as he was faithful in all other relations of life, so he was in the position assigned him in government service. Capt. Layton leaves a widow & seven children, one daughter and three sons unmarried. To them all he was a loving & devoted husband & father. The funeral will take place this Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence corner of Princess Ann & Dixon Streets. The friends of the family are invited to attend. It was the please of this writer to know the subject of this notice for the past fifteen years, and we have never known a man to attend more faithfully to the duties he assumed, or who was more generous & kind in his treatment of other than Capt. Lewis Layton. We tender our warm sympathies to the surviving members of the family in their deep bereavement, and pray that a kind Providence will comfort them with the consolation that the head of the household has been called hence to a better world above.
