Read More	CAPTAIN MOSES HOWE was born March 24, 1750 in Vernon (then Hinsdale), Vermont, and died December 18, 1816 in Vernon (then Hinsdale), Vermont.He married SUBMIT SCOTT February 16, 1773 in Vernon (then Hinsdale),Vermont.She was born 1773 of Hatfield, Massachusetts and was the first born child of of Captain Moses Scott (1713-1799) and his second wife Miss Elizabeth Henry (1726-1767) On June 27 1755 Moses Howe with his mother, JEMIMA HOWE ,and other siblings were taken captive by a group of twelve Abenaki Indian's .Moses father CALEB HOWE had been killed in the corn field near Fort Bridgman,in the intial Indian assault.Moses and a sister, Submit had been held much longer than the other family members.After a ransom was paid in 1760,Moses Howe was released back in the care of his mother Jemima Howe.When he was returned Moses could speak and understand no English,having been thoroughly indoctrinated into Indian culture and life. As an adult, he kept a tavern on the same farm where his father Caleb had lived. He fought in the Revolution and is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. In the Vermont Revolutionary Rolls, he appears on a payroll of Capt.Squire Howe's Company of Horse in the service of the state to assist the Sheriff at Guilford in Sept. 1782 in Gen. Fletcher's Brigade. Capt. Squire How, Lt. Moses How and Jesse Joy were allowed four days service each. Most of the men were detached from other companies. Moses died without a will. His widow was appointed administrator. In her petition to the court, she requested that his personal estate be granted to her, which it was. The appraisal of his personal estate was completed 2/5/1817, and totaled $72.25. His personal property consisted only of clothing, beds and bedding, household goods, furniture, a sleigh ($4.50),a large spinning wheel ($.58),two barrels of cider ($4.00),and a looking glass ($1.17).Although not a wealthy man,his life was rich with the trials and tribulations of life on the Frontier in Vermont. Lived on his father's farm in Vernon, and took over his father's tavern. 1838; Court deposition was taken to support Martha Howe's Revolutionary War pension claim. He was present at the marriage of Squire Howe and Martha Field at the home of his father Moses.
