McCoy, retired Captain of the Bureau of Navigation, died at his home in Baltimore last Wednesday evening after a short illness. Capt. MCCOY DIED IN BALTIMORE Well Known Captain Died After Short Illness Capt. Washington C. McCoy, retired Captain of the Bureau of Navigation, died at his home in Baltimore last Wednesday evening after a short illness. Capt. Wash, as he was affectionately known, was born in Dorchester County but had spent practically all of his adult life calling Crisfield his home and had lived here until about four years ago when he retired from the Navigation service. Since that time he has made his home with his step-son in Baltimore. Capt. Wash through his position as Commander of the "Kilkenny" was the intimate of many of the nations famous men during the 'twenties' and 'thirties', as his ship was used as a Presidential yacht by several presidents as well as the official boat of the Commerce Department of which he was a part. His contact with the great men of the country did not in any way effect him except to make him more human and thoughtful of those who were not as well off as himself. His friends in Crisfield and the whole Chesapeake Bay country will mourn his passing as he was well known in other ports of the Bay as he was here. Prior to his entering the Navigation Service, he was known as one of the most able sailing masters on the Bay and former members of his crew testify to his ability to handle a sailing vessel in any kind of weather. Funeral services will be held at the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors at 2, P.M. Saturday with the Rev. Melvin E. Wheatley, pastor of Immanuel Church, of which he was a member, will conduct the services. He is survived by his wife, and two stepsons, Mr. Rudolph Wilson and Mr. Arthur Wilson of Baltimore. The Crisfield Times, December 20, 1946 pg.1
