Bennett died on Sunday night at his home near California after an illness of less than three weeks. Death was due to pneumonia. On Tuesday afternoon he was buried at Ebenezer Church amongst his own people. Captain Bennett was born near Leonardtown a little more than sixty nine years ago and had lived all his life in the county. He 13 survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret E. Shermantine Bennett, of California; five sons, Howard, John, Robert, Earl and Benjamin; and two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Foote, and Miss Mary Helen Bennett Robert lives In New York. Mrs. Foote in Washington and the others are residents of Baltimore. He is survived also by three brothers. James A. Bennett, of Leonardtown, and John W. Bennett and Edgar A. Bennett of Washington, and three sisters, Miss Jennie, Bennett, Miss Jennie Bennett and Mrs: John B. Porter, all of Leonardtown. Other relatives and family connections are numerous In the county and nearly all were at the funeral. The little church could not hold all the friends and neighbors who gathered there and so, while Rev. Louis M. Young conducted a brief service, many of the men, "perforce, stayed outside and walked in silence. Their cars lined the road and filled the green in front of the churchyard. They bared their heads, as the coffin was borne over the turf bright with forget-me-nots, from the church to its Iast resting place. And when all was done, the solemn rites concluded, they stood and talked a little while, looking across the fields, carpeted with vivid green of growing wheat. "Wheat" they said, "is a hardy crop that stands a rough winter, but it will be cut down at last" And they talked of Captain Will with kindness and affection. Captain Will Bennett got his title when he ran a schooner doing bualness on the Chesapeake lie came of seafaring stock. His maternal grandfather Captain Wheeler, sailed the ocean for years in command of his own ship, making regular trips to LIverpool, England When he was a youngster of eighteen he viewed the coronation of Queen Victoria. When Captain Wheeler told that story he always added , "And the Queen was eighteen too." But, Captain Bennet soon after his marriage decided to be a farmer and a farmer he became and a good one which by no means killed his love for the water. At Esperanza Farms years ago he spent much time oystering and fishing while raising some of the finest crops of wheat and tobacco the farm had ever known. He was a member of the masonic lodge in Solomon's. Of these things his friends and neighbors talked with friendliness and appreciation. And they had even better things to say of him " He was a good man and a kind man," they said, and he could always be depended upon.
