Carey was born on Aug. 16, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa, son of George L. and Anna M. (Hansen) Franzen. He was baptized on Sept. 25, 1938, in Coleridge, Neb., and confirmed on April 6, 1952, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly. He graduated from Waverly High School and then attended Kirkwood Community College, the University of Dubuque and Ohio State University. Carey served for several years with the Army Reserves. He married Wilma D. Hartman on Dec. 14, 1956, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Tripoli for a couple of years before moving to Denver, Iowa. In 1964, the couple moved to Dubuque, for 27 years before moving back to Waverly. Carey worked for Rath Packing Co. for seven years before going to work for USDA FSIS federal meat inspection for 47 years, retiring on Dec. 3, 2010. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. In his spare time, Carey enjoyed farming, but most of all loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Wilma Franzen, of Waverly; two sons, Dean (Jolene) Franzen, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Jay (Camille Telleen) Franzen, of Indianola, Iowa; a daughter, Jennie (Terry) Dillin, of Waverly; six grandchildren, Angel (Jeremy) Munson, Levi and Lucas Dillin, August, Henry and Natasha Franzen; and a sister, Connie (Roger) Beard, of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna, on Dec. 13, 1992; his father, George, on July 12, 1993; and a sister, Darlene (Franzen) Harris, on July 18, 2003.
