Description	:	Carl B. Carlson, 90, Ryder, died on Friday, January 18, 2013 at a Garrison hospital. Carl B. was born June 25, 1922 on the family farm at Douglas, ND to August and Bertha (Gustafson) Carlson. He was inducted into the US Army on November 18, 1942 at Ft. Snelling, MN. He trained at Camp Beale, CA, before going overseas on January 5, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre with the 715th AMPH TRAC Battalion, and attained a Tec-5 rank. He was discharged at Ft. Carl B. was born June 25, 1922 on the family farm at Douglas, ND to August and Bertha (Gustafson) Carlson. He was inducted into the US Army on November 18, 1942 at Ft. Snelling, MN. He trained at Camp Beale, CA, before going overseas on January 5, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre with the 715th AMPH TRAC Battalion, and attained a Tec-5 rank. He was discharged at Ft. Lewis, WA, on Christmas Day, 1945. He farmed and worked for Boeing, building missile sites in North Dakota. He married Lila Pede of Max in 1949. Lila died of cancer in 1971. They had four children, Deborah, Barbara, Sandra, and Bradley. Carl married Ethel Wilhelm in 1975. She died in 2005. Ethel had 4 sons and numerous grandchildren. Carl drove bus for the Garrison School District during the years that his children were in school. He later drove milk truck for Iglehart Dairy for many years. Carl lived on the farm his entire life. He had a very strong faith and prayed about everything and he also like to sing. He loved gardening especially growing large red tomatoes and lots of cucumbers. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family. Carl was involved in many battles during his years in the service including, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, Ryukyue, and the Southern Philippines. He earned a number of medals. The Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American and Asian-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, and Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a member of the Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post #49 in Garrison for over 50 years. Carl was very fortunate to be part of the Honor Flight that went to Washington, DC in 2010. Carl's most memorable incident in the war was when they shot his tank out from under him in Saipan. He jumped in the ocean, filled his life jacket with air, when all of a sudden they blew his life jacket off with a machine gun. He spent four hours in the water before being rescued. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lila, second wife, Ethel, six sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace (Frank) Johnson, Helen (Art) Letzring, Ruth (Art) Johnson, Alma (Ervin) Conklin, Fern (John) Conklin, and Bernice (Gordon) Hacanson, one brother, August, son-in-law, Norval Golly, and sister-in-law, Ruth Carlson.
