Description	:	Carl Hoferer was born 27 Sept 1836 to Joseph & Moneke (Blust) Hoferer in Ottenhoven, Baden, Germany. He and his sister Sophie immigrated to the United States 14 September 1855, coming through New York City. In the 1860 census he is in the household of Andrew and Sophie Herman (his sister & brother-in-law) in Tazewell County, Illinois. 4 May 1862 Carl Hoferer and Harriet Jones, daughter of William & Mary (Goodwin) Jones, married in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. 3 March 1865 Carl enlisted in Company K, 47th Illinois Infantry (consolidated). He and his sister Sophie immigrated to the United States 14 September 1855, coming through New York City. In the 1860 census he is in the household of Andrew and Sophie Herman (his sister & brother-in-law) in Tazewell County, Illinois. 4 May 1862 Carl Hoferer and Harriet Jones, daughter of William & Mary (Goodwin) Jones, married in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. 3 March 1865 Carl enlisted in Company K, 47th Illinois Infantry (consolidated). While on a work detail unloading government supplies from a boat on 5 August 1865 at Demopolis, Alabama, a barrel fell on his right leg and broke his leg. Although it was not amputated, it made his leg shorter and it never healed properly. He had problems with it all his life and it was mentioned several times in his pension file. He was discharged at Demopolis, Alabama 21 January 1866. The Carl Hoferer Family went to Nebraska around 1877. They were in Cuming County for a short time and later they moved to Knox County where they homesteaded. First they homesteaded 160 acres and at a later date they took a timber claim also of 160 acres. Carl was a member of the GAR, Post Number 70 at Creighton, Nebraska and his grave has a GAR flag holder on it.
