Description	:	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, March 16, 1972 Carl McCauley, 87, died at his rural home near Edgar Saturday afternoon when a fire spread over his farmstead. McCauley was found between two buildings, badly burned, but Clay County Sheriff Lloyd Pontine speculated that McCauley died before the fire passed over his body. Pontine said McCauley, who lived alone, had apparently started a trash fire in a barrel which spread to some grass and then to the buildings. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Edgar with the Rev. Victor O. Schwarz officiating. Burial was in the Edgar cemetery (sic). McCauley was born in Illinois and came to Nebraska as a small child. He spent 75 years in Clay County. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Inez Watts, Edgar; two sons, Orval of Omaha and Harold of Edgar; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
