He was united in marriage to Amelia Jane Deen at Jamesville, Ohio, on October 3, 1868. To this union were born eight children, three having preceded him in death. His wife passed away on July 15, 1917, at Edgar, Nebraska. Mr. McCauley came to Nebraska in 1891 and resided on a farm northeast, of Edgar. Mr. McCauley was the last surviving Civil war veteran in Edgar. He served as a private in company D Illinois Cavalry. He enlisted December, 26, 1863, and was discharged December 20, 1865. He was a member of the G. A. R. post of Hutchinson, Kansas. Those surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Boddye, of Edgar with whom he made his home; four sons, John, of Lewis, Iowa; Arthur, of Oakland, Nebr.; Carl, of Edgar, and Blaine, of Edgar; 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Boddye, of Edgar. Rev. T. S. Hughes officiated. Music was. furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. W. R. Organ, Mrs. T. S. Hughes, J. G. Walley and M. L. Crandell, who sang, "Rock of Ages" and "Going Down the Valley One By One." Mrs. Hughes sang "There Will Be No Tears in Paradise." Mrs. Oscar Schlichtman accompanied the music. The pallbearers were members of the American Legion, Harold Grover, Murray Nisely, A. A. Recht, Cecil Stawser, Lloyd Cassell and Ernest Hattan. Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------ Served with Co. D of the 17th IL Cavalry during the Civil War per list of veteran burials in Nebraska.
