Description	:	MANCHESTER - Carl Rockwood Whitman Jr., of Manchester, passed away Dec. 24, 2012, after a long illness. He was born Aug. 15, 1930, the eldest son of Carl Rockwood Whitman Sr. and Laura (Pierce) Whitman. Carl was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and the Maine National Guard. From a young age, Carl loved heavy equipment and could run nearly everything. He started plowing roads in Manchester at the ripe old age of 16 for then road commissioner Brian Day. Read More	MANCHESTER - Carl Rockwood Whitman Jr., of Manchester, passed away Dec. 24, 2012, after a long illness. He was born Aug. 15, 1930, the eldest son of Carl Rockwood Whitman Sr. and Laura (Pierce) Whitman. Carl was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and the Maine National Guard. From a young age, Carl loved heavy equipment and could run nearly everything. He started plowing roads in Manchester at the ripe old age of 16 for then road commissioner Brian Day. He was himself road commissioner in Manchester while at the same time running his own construction business. Carl went on to run crane at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, retiring in 1998 as a civilian supervisor at the Navy SERE School. He was a member of the American Legion, Lafayette Lodge 48 in Readfield and a Golden Sheaf member of Manchester Grange 172. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Timothy Whitman. He is survived by his wife, Anne Blanche Whitman; three children, Wayne Whitman and his wife, Kim, of Readfield, Allen Whitman, of Manchester and Ellen Mallow and her husband, Peter, of Liberty; six grandchildren: Laura Lamport and her husband, Justin, Jacob, Samuel and Hannah Whitman, and Ava and David Mallow and one great-granddaughter, Lily Lamport; four brothers: Norman Whitman and his wife, Barbara, Paul Whitman and his wife, Ernie, Carroll Whitman and his wife, Peggy, and Michael Whitman and his wife, Lauren; six sisters: Priscilla Hippler and her husband, Charles, Dorothy Veilleux, Thelma Ware and her husband, Bud, Patricia Rolfe and her husband, Alan, Harriet Blanche and Deborah Gould and her husband, Kerry; a foster brother, Don Rowell, and his wife, Kristie; an aunt, Janet Thorne; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Burial with military honors will be at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 12/27/2012)
