He was a native of Harrison County, born March 17, 1891 at Magnolia. He was the son of John F. and Johanna Block Hansen. He farmed in this county and for a number of years served as the director of the Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance Company in Council Bluffs. He had moved from rural Missouri Valley to the care center two years ago. His wife Mildred died in 1981. Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Peterson of Council Bluffs and Frances Stirtz and Dorothy Hirst both of Missouri Valley, two sons Darrell Hansen of Woodbine and Marion Hansen of Fort Morgan, Colorado; a sister Frieda Radtke of Woodbine; twenty-one grandchildren and forty-one great-grandchildren. One son Dean F. Hansen preceded him in death in 1934. Following from 1981 History of Harrison County, page 204: Carl W. and Mildred M. (Doyle) Hansen have lived their entire life in Harrison County. Shortly after their marriage on Sept. 8, 1915, they moved to the Elizabeth Schwertley farm located on Hwy. 75 (now 183), nine and one-half miles north of Missouri Valley where they farmed until retirement in 1956, at which time they moved to Missouri Valley. During this time they raised a family of six, three daughters: Margaret (Mrs. Scott Peterson); Frances (Mrs. Arlon Stirtz); and Dorothy (Mrs. Rex Hirst) and three sons: Darrell of Woodbine, Marion of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Dean, who died in 1934 at the age of 5 years. Carl, born March 17, 1891 in Magnolia, was the son of John F. and Johanna (Block) Hansen, both natives of Germany. His parents came to the United States in the early 1880's. His family consisted of brothers: William and Fritz and sisters: Minnie (Mrs. Victor Sandstrom), Lena (Mrs. Authur Ruback), and Frieda (Mrs. E. Radtke). All are deceased except Frieda. Mildred, born Oct. 26, 1892, was the daughter of Michael and Anna (Tovey) Doyle, whose parents were natives of Ireland. Her family consisted of brothers: Bernard, and Harold, sisters: Vera (Mrs. Carl Block), Ada (Mrs. Harry Evers), and Lucille (Mrs. Burl Spooner), as well as two brothers and a sister who died in early childhood. All are deceased except Lucille. Both families were farmers living in and around Magnolia during most of their lifetime. Carl spent his entire life farming and constructing buildings on the farm where he lived. He was a director of the Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance Company for many years. He also served as board member and/or president of Melrose School District for most of the years during which his children attended grade school there. In his retirement years, he took up the hobby of wood working making many objects such as card tables, end tables, letter holders, coffee tables, etc. One would venture to say that probably some piece of his work has found its way to nearly every state in the United States. Carl and Mildred celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with an open house in their home on Sept. 7, 1989. All their children and spouses were present to help them celebrate the occasion. They also boast of having 24 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Mildred died on May 8, 1981 and is buried in the Magnolia Cemetery. (Submitted by Mrs. Rex Hirst) John F.
