Memorial Service is at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen, with Pastor Judy Schultz officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Carol's wishes were to be cremated with burial to take place at Bel Air Cemetery in Maryland at a later date. Carol Evelyn (Nutten) Hajzyk was born May 26, 1922, to Burt and Freda (Titus) Nutten in Hecla, SD. She was raised in Hecla and attended the Heinemann School her early years and then graduated from Hecla High School in 1939. After high school she worked in Aberdeen at the Virginia and Harbor cafes. She entered the Navy in 1943. She began in Hunter College in New York and then onto Stillwater, OK. It was during her years of service that she met her husband, Bob Hajzyk. She and the girls were out for dinner at a restaurant and some Army boys walked in and started talking to them. For Bob, it was love at first sight. Carol was honorably discharged in 1945 after two years of service. Carol and Bob were married on July 1, 1944 at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Shortly after the wedding, Bob was called to serve in Taiwan. Carol returned to Aberdeen and worked for O'Connor and Flynn real-estate firm. When Bob returned from service they moved to Indiana where Bob attended Purdue University. After graduation, they moved to Baltimore, MD. She was baptized on January 10, 1958 in the Catholic Church. They adopted a daughter, Sue Ristaff, and three years later they adopted a son, Michael Hajzyk. Carol loved sewing and was a master seamstress sewing clothes for her children and even a suit for her husband. Bob died February 26, 1977. Three years later, Carol moved back to Hecla and she and her widowed sister, Maye Glover, built a home where they lived until Maye's death in 1985. They loved hooking rugs and watching baseball together. They made many beautiful rugs that are still enjoyed by family today. Carol loved the Baltimore Orioles and was thrilled when they were in the World Series in 1963 and she could attend the games. Her last years were dedicated to the Minnesota Twins. She was always busy and while in Hecla, helped her nephew, Steve, by doing bookwork for his company, James River Building Supply. Carol moved to Aberdeen and lived in an apartment until a short stay at the assisted living in Groton. She moved back to independent living in an apartment until the move to Bethesda Assisted Living Center. She lived there for five years until she entered the nursing home in 2009. She resided there until her death. In 2019, her daughter Sue died of health issues in Pennsylvania and son, Michael, was killed in an accident in Florida. Carol will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Carol is survived by her sister, Alice Wilmsen; son-in-law, Sam Risteff; grandson, Tony Risteff; nieces: Nancy (Wayne) Schulz, Judy (Doug) Hamaker, Wendy (Mike) Ramburg, and Lisa Wilmsen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob; daughter Susan Risteff; son Michael Hajzyk; brothers: Archie Nutten, Dale Nutten, and Jerry Nutten; sister, Maye Glover; nephews, Jeffery Glover and Steven Glover; nieces, Linda Stearns and Kathy Schweer; and great nephews, Jordan Stearns and Matthew Schweer. - Schriver's Memorial Mortuary
