Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Carol Jean Plagens was born May 17, 1948, in Watertown, South Dakota. She was the only child of Howard and Janice (Pederson) Plagens. Carol spent her childhood in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1966. She later attended and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls with Bachelor's Degrees in English and German in 1970, and the University of Minnesota Graduate School with a Master's Degree in Germanic Literature in 1972. Carol married Paul Hinderaker in January, 1970, in Watertown. After spending three years in the Twin Cities, Paul and Carol returned to Watertown in 1973, where they lived at Lake Kampeska for the remainder of Carol's life. Carol taught and coached speech and debate in the Watertown School District from 1973 until the birth of her son and greatest joy, David, in 1981. Carol spent the remainder of her professional career spearheading the Human Resources efforts of Persona, Midcom, and other companies under the Anza umbrella over more than 30 years. She cherished the relationships and challenges that arose managing diverse businesses around the globe and at home in Watertown. Most of all, she loved supporting people. In her free time, Carol loved reading, playing bridge, traveling, watching sports, and caring for her home on Lake Kampeska. She especially loved connecting with and supporting young people that she treated as if they were her own children – students from her teaching days, employees, friends' children, and the friends of her son. Many people thought of her as their "second mom" and knew they could count on a safe space and supporting voice whenever the need arose. Near the end of her life, Carol was the fortunate recipient of a double lung transplant that allowed her to live nearly six "bonus years" that otherwise would not have been possible. She and her family are eternally grateful to the donor family and the incredible doctors and staff at the University of Minnesota Health System. They are, indeed, living angels. She is survived by her husband, Paul; son, David and daughter-in-law Ashley, of Omaha, NE; and father-in-law, Irving Hinderaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Janice Plagens, and mother-in-law, Eula Hinderaker. Memorials are suggested to the Watertown Community Foundation ~ Irving & Eula Hinderaker Family Fund, or the Watertown Regional Library.
