Was One of the Earliest Teachers of Muscatine Schools Funeral To Be Held Monday. Mrs. Carrie Barrows Fezler, one of the oldest and best known residents of South Muscatine, passed away at 9:30 o’clock this morning, at her home on Phillips street, death being due to senility. Mrs. Fezler had been failing in health for the past year and late in March was taken to Hershey hospital for treatment. After remaining at that institution for a little over a week, she was again removed to her home, where death came. Mrs. Fezler was one of the oldest living Muscatine teachers, having taught in the city high school when the first-class was graduated from the old school on the third floor of what is now the Scott house. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Musserville M. E. church and will be in charge of Rev. F. A. Smith and, if he is in the city, Rev. Charles Bryden, of the Baptist church, will assist. A Life Sketch. Mrs. Carrie Barrows Fezler was born in New York on September 18, 1832, and died in Muscatine, Iowa, on May 14, 1910, making her age 77 years, 7 months and 26 days. She was the oldest child of Herman Austin and Elizabeth Barrows. Her childhood and youth were passed in the vicinity of Utica, New York. She received what was then rare for a girl---a higher education---and was graduated with her sister, the late Mrs. J. P. Walton, from the Clinton Liberal Institute, April 10th, 1855. She took up the profession of school teaching and came to Muscatine in 1858. She was one of the early teachers of Muscatine schools and was teaching in the city high school at the time of the first class graduation. The high school was then held on the 3rd floor of the old Scott House at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Third street, with the school entrance on Third street. The Civil War came, and like many other brave girls of that day, she bade her lover answer the call of his country and go to the front. He was Captain George E. Burmeister of Co. C., 35th Iowa infantry. When he bade farewell he said: “You shall see me again either dead or alive.” The time came when he obtained a furlough for the purpose of coming home to be married. He was also to be promoted to the rank of major. The papers were made out to take effect upon his wedding day. A few hours before he should have started for home he went outside the camp, and a stray rebel bullet wounded him. In this condition he began his homeward journey reaching St. Louis, where he died, after arranging for the embalming and sending of his body home to his waiting sweetheart. He was buried in Greenwood cemetery and there by his side, after so many long years she will be laid to rest. Miss Barrows continued teaching for many years, both in Muscatine and Nevada, Ia. In Nevada she married J. Nellis with whom she went to South Dakota to live and where her only child, May, was born. The little one only lived 11 months and died. She was brought here and buried. Her marriage not being satisfactory she obtained a divorce and returned to teaching school. She was married in 1874 to Benjamin Furnas, of Letts, Iowa, who died in 1877. Afterward she married David Bellings who died in Colorado. In 1889 she was married to P. B. Fezler, of Billings, Minnesota, and in six months she again became a widow. She then returned to Muscatine to spend the remainder of her life. For the past fifteen years her home has been in South Muscatine, where many warm friends sincerely mourn her demise. In her young days she united with the Baptist church in New York state, bringing her letter to the Baptist church here. She was one of the earliest and most faithful members. During the latter years of her life she was quite feeble, but she never lost her friendship for the local newspaper reporters. She was always ready to assist them by gathering news. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. H. H. Harrison, who alone is left of their family, and by six nieces and one nephew, Mrs. James Q. Beatty, Mrs. A. C. Hopkinson and Joseph E. Hoopes, of Muscatine; Mrs. Ella Thompson, of Kiowa, Kan.; Mrs. May Lee, of Lookout, Okla.; Mrs. Lola Lee, of Capron, Okla., and F. A.
