Description	:	David P. Billings was born in 1817 at Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Massachusetts natives. On 30 Jun 1836 at the age of 19, he married Frances Louisa Pendleton at Enfield, Connecticut. Town records show "David P. Billings, of South Hadley, Massachusetts, married Louisa F. Pendleton of Springfield, Massachusetts." They raised 8 children: Louisa, George S., Sarah Jane, Almira, Ferdinand D., Norton Herbert, Jabez Pendleton, and an infant who died young. Billings was born in 1817 at Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Massachusetts natives. On 30 Jun 1836 at the age of 19, he married Frances Louisa Pendleton at Enfield, Connecticut. Town records show "David P. Billings, of South Hadley, Massachusetts, married Louisa F. Pendleton of Springfield, Massachusetts." They raised 8 children: Louisa, George S., Sarah Jane, Almira, Ferdinand D., Norton Herbert, Jabez Pendleton, and an infant who died young. He and Louisa began their lives together in Blandford, Massachusetts, a mill town and agricultural region in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. He was listed in the militia at Blandford for the years 1847-1853. In 1854, David P. and Frances Louisa migrated west to join a Massachusetts Colony in Caledonia, Minnesota where Louisa's uncle and brothers had settled. David P. Billings received a land patent for 40 acres on 15 Oct 1855 in Houston County, Minnesota. Jabez Pendleton Billings, their youngest son, was born at Caledonia on 21 Nov 1856. In the early 1860s, the family began a period of homesteading across the West, acquiring more land and improving their circumstances as new territories opened. The records show the following residences: 1865–Saratoga, Minnesota; 1867–Union Township, Story County, Iowa; 1872–Marshall, Minnesota; 1878–Deuel County, Dakota Territory; 1880–Lyons, Colorado. Early in his career, David P. was a lumber dealer (1845), farmer (1847-1852) and mechanic (1850) by occupation. On the frontier, he was a farmer, road and bridge builder, toll gate operator, and the owner and operator of general stores in new railroad towns where he and his family settled. On 8 Dec 1881, David's wife of 45 years, Frances Louisa Billings, passed away at the age of 64 years. Ten months later, on 21 Sep 1882, David P. Billings, age 65, married the widow, Carrie (Barrows) Furnas, age 50, at Marshall, Minnesota. David and Carrie remained in Marshall, Minnesota until Feb 1884 when they moved to Longmont, Colorado. In 1886, they moved to Nevada, Iowa, home of Carrie’s mother and sister. They purchased a house and lot on a prominent corner of the business district. In the spring of 1888, David P. and Carrie traveled to Lyons, Colorado in hopes of finding relief in the Colorado climate for David's rheumatism and other ailments. He improved for awhile, but the rigor of his illness took its toll. Two months later, he passed away at the home of his son on 8 Jul 1888, aged 71 years. The Letter of Administration of his estate dated 4 Sep 1888, Story County, Iowa, named these survivors: Carrie B. Billings, widow, a resident of Nevada, Iowa; and the following heirs: George Billings, Lyons, Colorado; Louisa Swartout, Kinbrae, Minnesota; S. Jane Reichart, Marshall, Minnesota; Elmira James, Glenwood, Colorado; Ferdinand Billings, Lyons, Colorado; Norton H. Billings, Lyons, Colorado; and Jabez P. Billings, Lyons, Colorado. He left a house and lots in Gary, South Dakota and a house and lots in Marshall, Minnesota—real estate valued at not more than $1,000 and personal property of $50. Obituary We have to announce the decease of David P. Billings, at Lyons, Colorado, on Sunday, the 8th inst. at the age of 71 years. The deceased was a pioneer settler of Lyon county, coming here in 1872, before the railroad was built, and except the railroad supply store, he had the distinction of being the first merchant in Marshall. Mr. Billings was then in the vigor of middle age, was associated with the handful of early settlers in promoting the growth of the new town, and as a man and citizen had the confidence and esteem of the community as it rapidly grew in numbers and importance. He was a native of Springfield, Mass., and his first western home was at Caledonia, Houston county, then he removed to Saratoga, Winona county, coming to Lyon county in 1872, where he remained until 1883, then going to Iowa. In 1882, being a widower, he was married, in Marshall, to a Mrs. Furness [Furnas], and he was her third husband. A few months ago he revisited Marshall, and failing health impelled him to seek the benefit of Colorado climate. He was the father of the Billings boys, well known to early residents of Marshall, and Mrs. J. F. Reichert and Mrs. I. M. Burrell are his daughters. Although aware of the low state of his health, and expecting his demise, the relatives here were only apprised of his death by a letter written by the widow to a Marshall gentleman, supposed to be an executor of Mr. Billings' will, seeking information of its contents. One of the daughters was on the way to Colorado, but could not be yet arrived before her father's demise. The News Messenger, Marshall, Minnesota, Friday, July 20, 1888 Obituary 2 Mr. D. P. Billings died Monday, July 9th, at the home of his son in Lyons, Colorado, at the age of 65. He had been long a sufferer of paralysis, and his health steadily failing, he and Mrs. Billings went about the first of May to Colorado in the hope of receiving benefit from the climate. He was much better for a time, and the end came somewhat suddenly to his friends. His feeble health prevented him from becoming generally acquainted in Nevada, but he was a man of attractive disposition and will be much missed by his friends.
