Read More	COTTINGHAM GREENVILLE, SC - Caroline Black-mon Cottingham, a lady of grace who loved her family and community, passed away peacefully April 22, 2009 at the Haven at Chanticleer. She was born August 27, 1920 eldest daughter of Elma Byrum and John Frederick Blackmon in Columbia, SC. Her early years were spent in Pelzer, SC where she was valedictorian of her high school class. She graduated from Converse College majoring in piano. Through the years, she served Converse as President of the Golden Circle Club, Class and Area Representative. In 1995, she was honored with the Converse 100 Award for her efforts in introducing students to the college. She lived her life as a genuine "Converse lady". In 1941, she married the love of her life, Marchant Colin Cottingham and they celebrated 63 years together before his death in 2005. For 20 years, she resided in Durham, NC where she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on the Boards of the American Field Service, Junior League, Salvation Army and Watts Hospital Auxiliary. While Symphony Board Chair, she coordinated the Boston Pops concert with Arthur Fiedler. The Cottinghams moved back to Greenville, SC in 1970 where she served on the Administrative Board of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and played the piano for Sunday School classes. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League, member of the Edith Wright Brummer and Novel Book Clubs, Greenville Historical Society, Rose Society and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Her proficiency as an accomplished pianist enabled her to share her joy with others her entire life. Other special interests were gardening, antique collecting, providing hospitality, and broadening her knowledge through reading and traveling. Mrs. Cottingham is survived by two daughters, Caroline Cottingham Mitchell and husband Nick of Winston-Salem, NC and Jane Louise Cottingham of Greenville; one son, M. Colin Cottingham, Jr. and wife Ina of Greenville; five grandchildren, N. Worth Mitchell, III and wife Tara of Stokesdale, NC, Caroline Mitchell Poteat and husband Landon of Asheville, NC, Sarah Logan Cottingham, Marchant C. Cottingham, III and Thomas Jonathan Jackson Cottingham; and two great-grandsons, Crayton and Winn Poteat. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Blackmon Watkins of Davidson, NC and Betty Blackmon Wannamaker of Orangeburg, SC. Visitation with the family will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe St., Greenville, SC 29601; Converse College, 580 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; or Interim HealthCare Hospice, 775 Spartan Blvd., Ste. 101, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
