Immigrating in 1851, were the Werbelow's including the 23 year old lady Caroline Werbelow, her widowed mother Marie, her stepsister, brothers, her unmarried uncle Carl Werbelow who was a school teacher, and other relatives. Immigrating in 1851, were the Werbelow's including the 23 year old lady Caroline Werbelow, her widowed mother Marie, her stepsister, brothers, her unmarried uncle Carl Werbelow who was a school teacher, and other relatives. All of whom immigrated April 12, 1855 from Hanseberg, they sailed on the ship Union from Bremanhaven and arrived in America June 1, 1855, this group went directly to the middle west and first lived at Hustisford, Wisconsin with other relatives who came to America. Caroline Werbelow was born February 14, 1832 in Hansberg in the Province of Brandenberg Prussia. We do not know if she and Carl were acquainted in Germany or met later in America, but found each other they did and were married on July 12, 1855 in Watertown, Wisconsin by Judge Roete. For their wedding trip they walked from Watertown to Juneau, 12 miles. They lived at Hustosfort, Wisconsin until the spring of 1862. They moved their family two girls to Fairbolt County, Minnesota, in August that same year were compelled to flee because of an uprising of the warring Sioux Indians. After many grief hardships they arrived back in Wisconsin in October (this is during the time of the Civil War). They then lived as renters on a farm until 1865. In 1865 Nebraska opened to settlers and land could be acquired as homesteads. Carl Fredrich Schwartz and Caroline Werbelow set out for Nebraska, with oxen and wagon. Caroline walked all the way, as she was pregnant and the wagon had no springs. They spent the winter in Rock Creek in Cuming County, Nebraska. In spring 1866 they homesteaded 160 acres of land four miles southeast from the place where Stanton, Nebraska is now situated. Here they established their home; this land bordered the Elkhorn River. They were fortunate that there was wood for fuel as well as for constructing buildings from the trees along the river. The land had very rich soil. They lived several months in a covered wagon. It was here that their son William Tobias was born on June 13, 1866. It is said he was the first white child born who was registered in Stanton County. William had four sisters and one brother. Since WWII the Neumark - and Königsberg in der Neumark- belongs to Poland.
