Carolyn Ann Brown of Larkspur died Thursday, January 3, 2002 at the home of her son Eric and family in Rochester, Minnesota where she and her husband were visiting after the Christmas holiday. She was 67.
Carolyn was born in Holyoke on July 24, 1934, the second daughter of George Jr. and Ruth L. (Blackledge) Wilcox. She attended Holyoke schools and graduated from Phillips County High School in May 1952. She then attended the University of Colorado at Boulder until the spring of 1955.
On April 3, 1955 she was united in marriage to LaVonne W. "Von" Brown in the Methodist Church in Holyoke. To this union three children were born: Paula, in 1956; Eric in 1962; and Kevin in 1966.
Carolyn, her husband Von and infant daughter Paula moved from Holyoke to San Leandro, California in January 1957 where Von started his career with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department. Carolyn was employed first at Yale Forklift Co. as an accountant and later with Kaiser Aluminum as payroll supervisor.
The Brown family moved back to Englewood in August 1977 following Von's appointment as Chief of Police at Glendale. Carolyn did volunteer work at Cherry Creek High School and in 1978 became a full-time employee, at first working with the Overland High School I-Team Project and then becoming the Office Manager at High Plains Elementary School in 1986. She retired from the Cherry Creek School District in June 2000 after 22 years with the district.
Carolyn was a dedicated employee, adapted easily to the age of computers in her work and maintained a high level of loyalty from teachers and staff throughout her career.
Above all, her love of family came first and foremost. Grandchildren were the love of her life. She looked forward in retirement to spending more time with them, sewing for them, doing volunteer work at the Castle Rock Library and traveling. She and her husband recently made a vacation trip to Italy and France.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father George Jr. in 1966, sister Lois Lohman in 1984, daughter Paula Jean Gullickson in 1989 and mother Ruth in 1993.
She is survived by her husband Von, son Eric and wife Janet and grandchildren Arjay and Kailey of Rochester, Minnesota; son Kevin and wife Mary Ann and granddaughter Sydney Mae of Parker; grandchildren Travis, Stephanie and Tim Gullickson of Spartanburg, South Carolina; cousin Viola Colglazier of Holyoke; brother-in-law Howard Lohman of Oakley, California; nephew Rick Lohman of Oakley, California; and niece Sharon Saunders of Tracy, California; numerous other cousins; and a multitude of friends.
Services for Carolyn Ann Brown are Thursday, January 10 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Holyoke with Rev. Darrell Dennis officiating. Interment will be in Holyoke Memorial Park. |
