She was born July 17, 1935 in Waterville to Harold W. and Gladys P. (Dyer) Solt. Carol grew up in Waterville, Clay Center, and Scott City, Kansas, graduating from Scott City High School in 1953. Read More	Carolyn Anne (Solt) Musil, age 81, of rural Waterville, Kansas, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017, at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kansas. She was born July 17, 1935 in Waterville to Harold W. and Gladys P. (Dyer) Solt. Carol grew up in Waterville, Clay Center, and Scott City, Kansas, graduating from Scott City High School in 1953. She attended and graduated from Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, in 1955, and continued her college education at Washburn University in Topeka, earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1957. While in college, she met and began dating Orlin D. Musil of Waterville. During her senior year of college on December 7, 1956, Orlin and Carol went to dinner. Orlin asked her what her future dreams were and Carol said she’d always wanted to move to Hawaii to teach school so she could grade papers on the beach each night. Disappointed, Orlin said: “Oh, I kind of thought we might get married…” and presented her with an engagement ring. Carol happily accepted his proposal and traded dreams of beaches for dreams of golden Kansas wheat fields. They were married on June 8, 1957, at the Waterville United Methodist Church. Moving to Topeka together, Carol began her teaching career at State Street Elementary, eventually moving to Wanamaker Elementary until 1971. Orlin and Carol have one daughter, Brenda. Carol stayed home with Brenda and put her teaching career on hold for several years. In March 1974, Orlin, Carol, and Brenda moved to the family farm six miles south of Waterville at Cottage Hill. Renewing her teaching license in 1976, she began to substitute teach in the Valley Heights school district, and became a full time teacher at Blue Rapids Elementary school in 1978. During her 19 years there, she taught both 5th and 2nd grade to two generations of students. She retired from the Valley Heights school district in 1997. Carol loved education and joked that she taught school to support Orlin’s farming habit. In retirement, she continued her role as farm wife, amazing cook, did some substitute teaching, and read as many books as she could get her hands on. Carol is survived by her husband of 59 years, Orlin, who still lives on the family farm near Waterville, as well as their daughter Brenda L. Unruh and her husband Conrad, of Topeka. Other survivors include Carol’s brother Bill Solt and wife Deanna of Wichita, nephew Mark Solt, and niece Debra (Solt) Mullin, and her husband BJ, along with two great nieces and two great nephews, and six great-great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Carol’s sister-in-law Vicky R. (Roepke) Nightingale, and husband John of Topeka, and nephew Brent J. Nightingale of Detroit, Michigan. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Valley Heights Foundation (for scholarships) or Cottage Hill Cemetery and may be sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home at PO Box 61, Waterville, KS 66548-0061. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville, Kansas.
