Description	:	Carroll, always known as Carl, whose great grandmother was a descendant of the famous CARROLL family, one of which signed the Declaration of Independence, was given that name to commemorate their connection to this great family. His father was Hugh E. Smith, who, along with most of his family, emigrated from Quebec, Canada, via Panama and overland to the Pacific, arriving in San Francisco in 1853 on the "SS Pacific". His father was Hugh E. Smith, who, along with most of his family, emigrated from Quebec, Canada, via Panama and overland to the Pacific, arriving in San Francisco in 1853 on the "SS Pacific". His mother was Georgia Anna Spriggs (whose mother was the CARROLL), whose parents had come Georgia across the plains by ox teams in the 1850's. When Carl was a young child his family moved from the Vacaville, California area to Wasco Co. Oregon for about 30 years where they engaged in wheat farming where they held over 2200 acres of land. Carl worked as a harvester on the family's large wheat farms driving the huge threshing machines pulled by 5 teams of horses. After 1917 he and his wife and children moved back to California to Colusa Co., and from about 1920 onward lived in Willows CA. He was an expert in harvesting equipment and practices at that time. He was married 1st to Ila Fowler on 2 Oct 1902 in OR, this union ended in divorce, with one son, Carroll Smith Dean (who was adopted by step-father).Carl married 2nd to Gertrude Elizabeth Shaffer on 16 Apr 1910 in Gilliam Co., Oregon. They had three children: Zela Gertrude, Clarence Carroll both born in Oregon and Robert William Smith born in Willows, Calif. Carl was a great sports fan and followed the teams avidly on the radio every Sunday. He also loved duck and geese hunting and the family enjoyed many hearty meals (including a few bites of buckshot!).
