Read More	Carroll Frederick “Pete” Disney, 86, of Chanute, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Heritage Health Care Center. Pete, as he was known, was born in Walnut, Kansas on June 1, 1927, the son of Elbert and Eva (Killough) Disney. He was the second youngest of six children. He grew up in rural Walnut, Kansas and attended school in a one room school house in Porterville, KS. He went to high school for one year in Stark, Kansas and three years in Savonburg, Kansas where he graduated in 1945. After high school, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. His basic training took place at the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, TX where he spent the majority of his time. Pete served approximately one and a half years in the Navy during World War II before returning home to Chanute. He went to work for Foodtown in Chanute. Pete met his future wife Virginia Lee O’Brien in 1948. They were united in marriage on October 23, 1949 in Chanute and have resided in Chanute ever since. In October of 1950, around the beginning of the Korean War, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was sent to Fort Leonardwood, MO for basic training and was later stationed at Wolters Air Force Base at Mineral Wells, TX. He was a member of the 835th Aviation Engineer Battalion. On April 25, 1952, he was honorably discharged and returned to Chanute to live with his wife Virginia and began working again at Foodtown. In 1954, Pete and Virginia purchased a grocery store located at 1116 North Santa Fe. They changed the name to Disney’s Market, which became known for its friendly service and the best cuts of meat in town. They owned and operated Disney’s Market for 38 years until they sold it in the fall of 1992. Never one to sit around, Pete took on several part-time jobs to keep him busy after retiring from the grocery business. He started his own ice business in 1994, delivering ice to local businesses. He drove a delivery truck for Meals on Wheels for 16 years and also drove for Shield’s Motor Co. Inc. Pete was a 63 year member of The American Legion and a member of The First United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the Chanute Housing Board and was recognized in 2012 for his 43 years of service as a board member. In addition to working, Pete enjoyed spending time with his friends for coffee, sitting out on his deck watching rabbits, squirrels and birds, fishing for white bass at Grand Lake, and sharing his sense of humor and good nature with his family and friends. He took pride in his yard, flowers and tomato garden. Pete was treasured by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he especially loved spending time with them. He leaves behind his wife of more than 63 years, Virginia Disney; two daughters, Diana Bruenger and her husband Lyle of Chanute and Debbie Ebeling and her husband Greg of Paola, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron Bruenger and his wife Carrie of Chanute, Derrick Bruenger and his wife Katie of Chanute, Bryan, Lindsay and Kaleb Ebeling of Paola; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Waylon and Wyatt Bruenger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Disney and Eva Disney Dillon; one brother, James Franklin Disney; and four sisters, Mary Freda Brundage, Edna Faye Curtis, Frances Elizabeth Kirby and Alice Marie Henderson. Memorials in his name may be made to The Chanute Area Veterans Memorial or The First United Methodist Church and may be left with the funeral home.
