Read More	Carroll Fredrick Poppen, 68, of De Smet, SD, died on Monday, December 21, 2015, in Sioux Falls, SD, after an 19 month battle with stomach cancer. Carroll was born on March 21, 1947 in De Smet, the seventh child and youngest son of Frederick Elmer and Wilhelmina Alma (Albrecht) Poppen. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Falconer, on December 17, 1966 and they raised two beautiful daughters, Cindy and Amy. In 1965 he graduated from De Smet High School and enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as a Corpsman aboard ship during the Vietnam Conflict. He received a honorable discharge from the Navy in 1969. After his Navy service, Carroll attended Duke University's Physician Assistant program and after graduating in 1972, he was employed by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Carroll and Donna made their home, raised their daughters and became members of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester. Carroll was best known for his 38 years as a Physician Assistant practicing in the Otorhinolaryngology Department (the area of medicine that deals with disorders and conditions of the ear, nose and throat (ENT) region and related areas of the head and neck). Many times he was invited to give lectures, he wrote many professional publications, and was made an Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic. In 2009 the staff of the Mayo Clinic recognized his caring attitude and accessibility to patients and colleagues by presenting him with the Karis Award. Carroll was a 'Pioneer' in the area of the Physician Assistant profession in the Midwest. He was the President of the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants in 1975 and again in 1995. In 1991, he was honored with an Outstanding Physician Assistant Award. After retiring from the Mayo Clinic in 2012, Carroll and Donna returned to DeSmet, SD. He continued to practice medicine part time, working for Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat of Sioux Falls, as part of their outreach program. Carroll was a strong leader, inspirational mentor, and a fun-loving friend who always encouraged others to do their absolute best. He enjoyed gardening and hunting, but enjoyed fishing with family and friends the most. While having achieved many professional accomplishments over his lifetime, his favorite memories and greatest accomplishment was his family, who were by his side during the final days of his life. He was exceptionally proud of his daughters, who blessed him with a grandson and three beautiful granddaughters. He was survived by his wife, Donna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Jon Johnson, Worthing, SD and Amy and Robert (Rob) Talley, Frisco, CO; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lyle 'Cork' and Audrey Poppen, Clear Lake, SD and Alan 'Butch' Poppen, De Smet, SD; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Charles Vanske, Wadena, MN and Joyce and Marvin Thompson, De Smet, SD; and four grandchildren, Rebecca, Johnathan, Brynn and Lyric. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Frederick William, John Ferdinand and Paul Theodore Poppen. A visitation was held on Sunday, December 27, 2015 in the Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet, SD. The funeral service was held Monday, December 28, 2015 in the American Lutheran Church, De Smet. The Following Tribute to Carroll Poppen appeared in the imPAct, the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants Newsletter, November/December issue Volume 33, Number 4: "The Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants (MAPA) owes its strong foundation to the work that Carroll Poppen did in his many rolls on the board and in working with colleagues, legislators and medical staff at the Mayo Clinic. Carroll is gravely ill in in hospice and MAPA would like to pay tribute to his legacy here with some words and reflections from his friends and colleagues. Carroll was the utmost gentleman in everything he did, but was never afraid to "go to bat" for the profession and our place in medicine in Minnesota and at the national level. So many of us have been touched by Carroll's efforts. Let it not be forgotten that Carroll was the auctioneer at our student scholarship fundraisers, and due to his clever ways, the donors kept bidding upward! Even the new PA students benefited from his efforts. As PA's we have not only become a force in medical care due to some of Carroll's work, but as colleagues and friends, we have been blessed to know such a great individual. Carroll Poppen is a "founding father" of the physician assistant profession in the Midwest. a 1972 graduate of the PA program at Duke University, Carroll was hired at Mayo Clinic in Rochester upon graduation by the department of Otorhinolaryngology ("ENT"), only the second physician assistant to be employed at a Mayo practice. With the exception of a brief time in Oklahoma from 1983-1985, he practiced at Mayo Clinic for a 30 year span. He has become an inspiration to hundreds of physician assistants at Mayo and throughout the Midwest. Carroll started his health care career serving as a Navy corpsman from 1965-1969. Upon his honorable discharge from service, he entered the PA program at Duke University under the direction of Dr. Eugene Stead, the founder of the profession. He was in the sixth class to graduate from the program which started in 1967. Carroll was one of the original PAs to achieve national recognition by the National Commission on the Certification of PAs in 1976, and one of the first PAs to be 'registered' by the state of Minnesota in the 1990s. Throughout his career, Carroll was active in many professional societies: Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants (President - 1975 and 1995, Legislative Committee Chair, Continuing Medical Education Committee Chair Course Director of 13th Annual meeting held at Mayo Clinic in 1988 Course Director of 19th Annual fall meeting held in Rochester in 1994, and Corporate Affairs Liaison from 1990-2012) American Academy of Physician Assistants Society of Physician Assistants-Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Secretary from 1992-1994 and President from 1994-1996 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Carroll had been a renowned educator of PAs, physicians and nursing staff at Mayo Clinic, reaching academic appointment in the Mayo Medical School in 1990 and elevation to Assistant Professor of Otorhinolaryngology since 1996. He served as clinical faculty at Augsburg College and the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Carroll was a frequent lecturer at state and national conferences, including his home state of South Dakota. He has given more than 50 invited presentations and published at least 20 journal articles. His caring attitude toward patients and his accessibility to colleagues lead to staff recognition with the Mayo Clinic Karis Award in 2009. He was active in his community in Rochester through youth and adult sports in his church. In his free time he enjoys boating, fishing, gardening, hunting, softball, volleyball and bowling. He made regular trips to South Dakota during his time in Rochester to visit family and hunt birds. He returned there upon his retirement from Mayo in 2012. His colleagues at Mayo continue to be influenced by his vast professional knowledge, great courtesy and accessibility to peers and patients, and his boundless efforts to advance the PA profession. Recollections from Walt Rothwell, PA-C When I first started practice at Mayo Clinic as a PA 25 years ago, Carroll was already known as an elder statesman among our peers. In the years that followed, I had the opportunity to know him well as I became involved with the Minnesota academy. We carpooled together to many MAPA events, and I came to understand his insight into institutional and state issues. Through my years in practice at Mayo, it also became clear that Carroll was a "Goto" resource for all ENT-related problems. Countless Mayo staff brought their family members to Carroll to solve problems. His universal regard by all levels of Mayo staff was critical to the easing of institutional constraints regarding which patients can be scheduled to see PA and APN providers at Mayo. That is but one way that Carroll's quiet leadership had a huge impact on our profession. All PAs in Minnesota have fond memories of Carroll and send best regards to his entire family.
