The funeral services were held at the St. Joseph's church on Wednesday. +++ Daily Iowa Capital, Des Moines, IA, Friday, October 30, 1896, pg. 6, col. 3 Casper Becker, a highly respected pioneer of Clayton, died at his home on Monday morning, October 26, after an illness of two weeks, from a rupture of an artery near the brain. Mr. Becker was born at Saarbruecke, Muhlfeldt, near Metz, Germany, November 1, 1813, emigrating to this country when a boy. He was a soldier in the Mexican war, and was one of the carpenters at the building of Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien, Wis. Purchasing 160 acres of land of the government he settled down as a farmer near Clayton where he continued to reside to the day of his demise. +++ Parish History of St. Joseph's Catholic Church Family Ancestry - Parish Members in 1800's Casper Becker was born in Trier, France, now Prussia, October 25, 1813. He left his native country for America in 1840, landing in New York, June 4, 1840. He enlisted in the Florida war on November 4, 1840, in Company E, First United States Infantry, under command of General Scott. He was stationed in Florida eight months, at Fort Crawford, Wis., two and a half years, and at Fort Atkinson, eighteen months. From there he went to Jefferson Barracks, Mo., where he received his final discharge in 1845, having served his country for five years. He came to Clayton County and settled on a farm on section 33, which he had purchased previously. He was the owner of 555 acres of finely improved land and classed as a prominent and successful farmer and live-stock-breeder in Clayton County. In June 1847 he married Lizzie Struckhoff. She was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1820. There were three children of this marriage: John, born April 17, 1849; Catherine, born Nov. 9, 1850, and Elizabeth, born Aug. 1, 1852. The mother died leaving these children, and Mr. Becker was married the second time in July of 1856, to Anna Book, a native of Hanover, Germany. She was born on February 28, 1828. This union was blessed with seven children: Mary, born Aug. 29, 1858, Dederick W., born Feb. 20, 1860; Casper H., May 29, 1861, Harmon, Dec. 21, 1862; Sarah A., Aug 5, 1865, Joseph H., May 13, 1867, and Rosena, April 8, 1871. Mr. Becker was one of three men responsible for the building of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He died on October 26, 1896, age 83. His second wife, Anna Book, died August 7, 1911, age 83. +++ St. Joseph's Parish, Garnavillo, Clayton, Iowa Casper Becker - Could not find photo of him but the date that you have of his death does match the cemetery record of 10/26/1896. It also says that he came here from France in 1840 in the church records and not Prussia. Because there was not a Catholic Church in Garnavillo, the Casper Becker home, John Uriell home and William Schoulte home were the places that Mass was held. It says in the church records that these 3 families met in 1843 to discuss buying of some land in Garnavillo to construct a new church, St. Bridget's. However, many years passed before the church was built. In 1866 a committee was formed with the members of Casper Becker, Frank Schoulte, and James Uriell, to raise funds to build a Catholic church. The church was completed on July 1, 1876 and the name was changed to St. Joseph. It appears that Casper was a huge part of starting the Catholic Church in Garnavillo. An interesting little piece of information that I also discovered about Casper. He was one of the original members of the Garnavillo Horse Thief Detective Association. Not sure what they did, but I hope he never had to hang anybody!!! +++ Becker, Casper - Company E., First United States Infantry, under command of General Scott. He was stationed in Florida eight months, engaged in the Florida War in 1840. Served 5 years: in Florida, at Fort Crawford, Wis., Fort Atkinson & Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Discharged in 1845. He received a Military Bounty Land Warrant #5901 for his service as "... a Private in Captain Miller's company, 1st Regiment United States Infantry, Florida War", assigned 11/10/1851. Total of 160 acres in twp 97N - Range 8W - Section 1, Winneshiek county, Iowa (GLO Vol 601, page 153). Died in 1896 and is buried in St. Joseph's cemetery, Garnavillo. Gravestone.
