The death certificate says she died April 27, 1924, age about 87, which would make her born in 1837 dates on the gravestone is born 1827 and died 1923 Mrs. Willis* Fletcher, one of the early pioneers of Nebraska, passed to rest Sunday, April 27, 1924, at the advanced age of 87 years. Mrs. Fletcher has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Charles Harris, for some time past, where she passed away Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Old Elmer Church Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. L. Terry of Wauneta. Interment was in the Elmer Cemetery where the remains were laid to rest beside her husband who had preceded her to the better lands. OBITUARY Catherine McDougal was born in Elward* County, Illinois, near Bloomington. Later her parents moved to Iowa, and in 1885 they located in Nebraska. She married Willis* Fletcher (Dec 27, 1858 in Christian Co., IL) and to this union was born eight children, four of whom have passed to rest. She leaves to mourn her death, four children, 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren and a large circle of friends. She has been a faithful member of the Church of Christ for many years. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbors for their help during the illness of our beloved mother. We thank one and all for the beautiful flowers, kind words and acts of sympathy and comfort. Last name on marriage record was spelled McDougle. On the 1850 census in Moultrie Co., IL & also in the above obituary its spelt McDougal. First name was spelled Catharine on the 1850 census, as well as the 1860, 1870 & 1900 census, as well as their marriage record. *Elward County not found on current atlas - possibly changed to McLean County. (some of this info was written to me in an email by Jeri Herbert) I was told the story of how her and her husband met. She loved to serve. Catherine was Willis' first wife caregiver. She was very very sick. It must have been in the winter because she would have to travel in the snow. She didn't have shoes so she would wrap her feet with gunnysacks trying to protect them from the ice cold snow to make the trip walking to their house. By the time she arrived her feet would be chapped and bleeding. On his wives death bed and she asked her husband and Catherine to sit on each side of her and she took both their hands then she asked them to promise to marry after she went.
