Read More	Obit. for Catherine Emerson: The death of Mrs. Catherine Emerson occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Merkins, in this city, last Saturday evening at six o'clock. Mrs. Emerson had been in poor health for the past year with hardening of the arteries, but had been seriously ill for only the past week. Her death will come as a shock to the relatives and many friends in Jefferson County. Mrs Emerson was a woman of inestimable worth, and her passing will be greatly mourned. Catherine Wilson Emerson was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Harbour Wilson and was born in William county, Ohio, on October 31st, 1837. When four years of age she came with her parents, to Jefferson county, Iowa, locating near Glasgow, where she has since resided. On September 19th, 1858, at Glasgow, she was united in marriage to W.J. Emerson, who passed away at their home on September 23rd, 1889. To this union were born nine children, five of whom-three daughters and two sons-have preceded their mother in death. The surviving children are as follows: Mrs. Mary Metz, of Glasgow; Mrs Ida Merkens of Fairfield, Alonzo Emerson, of Glasgow, and Mrs. Amy Masden, of Fairfield. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren. After raising her own children, Mrs. Emerson took her daughter Ada's three daughters after the death of their mother and reared then as carefully as she did her own. Funeral services were held yesterday morning from the Merkin's home on North Main street, in charge of Rev. H.A Mosser, of the First Presbyterian church. The body was then taken to Glasgow where services were held at one o'clock. In early girlhood Mrs. Emerson united with the Baptist Chruch at Glasgow, of which church she has been a faithful memeber ever since. Find A Grave contributor Jan Fretheim
