Ida Catherine Friend was born in Ellensburg to George and Willa Friend on December 17, 1923. She went "home" from her earthly residence at Hearthstone Cottage on July 12, 2016, after several weeks of being showered by the love of her family. She lived her earliest years in town, eventually moving with her family to their farm on Emerson Road. Catherine attended Denmark School and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1942. She married her school bus driver, Glenn Gregory, on June 27, 1943. She and Glenn started their married life on the Gregory Family Jersey Farm on Umptanum Road. Catherine had considered studying to be a nutritionist after high school, but instead spent years finding many ways to stretch available ingredients to feed her growing family. And her hospitality and generosity were legend. Even with all that "stretching," she was always able to graciously fit more folks around her table - and even feed them. Catherine was active in the First Christian Church, Cove-Damman Home Ec Club, Women's Welcome Club, CWU aquacize class and Scholarship Luncheon group. For many years she and Glenn enjoyed playing cards in their Farm Bureau Pinochle Club. When her children were young she would take seasonal jobs like working the potato harvesters and at Twin City Foods. When the kids were older, she went to work full-time at Fitterer's Furniture until her retirement. Glenn passed away in 1990. Catherine and Thomas Monacelli were married on June 29, 1996. They enjoyed several years of travel - much of it in Tom's Cessna, appropriately named "Twilight Time." As "wife," she was truly Glenn's helpmate and, later, his caregiver until his death. She and Tom cared for each other, both battling health issues in those last couple of years, until his death in 2008. As "Mom," Catherine was a supporter of her children's activities, ranging from school to 4-H to Rainbow Girls to youth and school sports. As "Grandma," she always had hugs, dress-up clothes, toys and games, and extra beds. To everyone she showed great love, a caring heart, amazing wit, and the generous, hospitable spirit that made her so special to so many. And we were all blessed (and many of us probably kept alive) by the covering of her prayer. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, George and Willa Friend; husband, Glenn Gregory; husband, Thomas Monacelli; grandson, Ryan Gregory; sister, Betty Dodge; and son-in-law, Richard Aaby. She is survived by her beloved little sister, Willa "Billie" Lipscy of Twin Bridges, Montana; her children - who she dearly loved and blamed for her high blood pressure: Roger (Jan) Gregory, Wenatchee; Diana Aaby, Buckley; Glenna (Rick) Carmody, Yakima; Marsha (John) Smith, Ellensburg; and Jamie (Stacie Brown) Gregory, Puyallup; three "children of her heart," Karen (Gaines) Gregory, East Wenatchee; Ralph Strand, Ellensburg; and Maidee Watson, Puyallup. She is also survived by eleven greatly adored grandchildren: Roger (Jana) Gregory, Jr., East Wenatchee; Marnie Gregory (Mason) Pickett, Richland; Krista Munch (Joe) Kinne, Issaquah; Gabe (Erika) Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; Whitney Smith, Pasco; Brianne Carmody (Steve) Schorzman, Yakima; Shannon Carmody (Ryan) Randell, Puyallup; Kendra Carmody, Tacoma; Taylor Gregory, Puyallup, Addison (Brooke) Gregory, Tacoma; and Elliot Gregory, Puyallup; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews, all precious to her. Over the past several years, after losing her sight and dealing with congestive heart failure, Catherine continually professed to have no fears and proclaimed that her greatest desire was to see Jesus. Mission accomplished, precious Mama. Rest well in the arms of your Savior. We'll see you on the other side. A celebration of her life will be held in the Garden Walk at Hearthstone Cottage, 802 E. Mt. View Ave., Ellensburg, Sunday, July 24th at 2:00 pm. Arrangements have been made by Brookside Funeral Home and memories may be left at their website www.brooksidefhc.com.
