Catherine “Kay” Jane (Kriha) Ripp was born April 15, 1929 at her home in Buffalo County, Nebraska (Schneider TWP 11-14-23) to Charles and Helen (Landrigan) Kriha. Kay grew up on her family's homestead near St. Wenceslaus in Buffalo County. One of her favorite stories to tell from her childhood was about how they lived in the chicken coop while her dad built the house. She always laughed that she wasn’t sure who were the better roommates, the chickens or her family. She attended country school to 8th grade. Kay was very active in 4-H and earned herself a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Her passion for 4-H was passed down through her kids and many grandkids. Kay graduated from Ravenna High School in 1946. After high school, Kay taught K-8 rural school at Antelope Valley District #103 until Jerry courted her after returning home from the war. Little did she know, that young man who always volunteered to pick up his brother from school; and Tuesday nights in Ravenna at the weekly dances would turn into the beginning of something truly remarkable. Jerry always joked that Kay had grown up while he was away in the service, while she always joked that she thought he was too stuck up for her taste. Gerald “Jerry” Charles Ripp and Catherine “Kay” Jane Kriha were married on June 30, 1948 at St. Wenceslaus Church in rural Buffalo County, Nebraska. Jerry and Kay moved to the little white house on the farm with no electricity, no indoor plumbing, full of chicken feathers after the wedding where Jerry resided until his death in 2014, and Kay remained for another five years before moving to Ravenna in 2019. In May 1949 they were blessed with their first child, with eight more to follow. Jerry and Kay raised 7 ornery boys and two determined girls to be strong in their faith, to spread their wings and remember their roots bound by love and support of the Ripp family. On June 30th, 2013, Jerry and Kay celebrated 65 years of marriage. The celebration was at their daughter Janet’s home in Burwell, Nebraska. Mass and renewal of vows was held, t-shirts were made, photos were taken, and a crowd of hundreds were fed. This was the last of many great anniversary celebrations as Jerry was called home to the Heavenly Kingdom May 1st, 2014. Jerry and Kay shared a great love and life together devoted to God, their kids and grandkids. Kay was known to be a woman of strong faith, extreme talent, patience, and a heart that would give to any and all. She absolutely loved to spend days with Jerry, her kids and grandkids fishing. She spent endless summers fishing off her dock, or trolling at Sherman Dam located East of Loup City, Nebraska. She also traveled to Canada twice a year for many years making camp at Lake LaRonge Saskatchewan, Canada. Kay loved to surround herself with family, friends, and great fishing. If Kay wasn’t fishing, you could find her creating beautiful works of art in her sewing room or baking in her kitchen. She had a love for all things quilting and crafting. Kay would spend countless hours in her sewing room piecing together quilts, clothing and hats for babies to donate, and teaching her granddaughters how to sew. Kay had a sweet tooth for rolls and anything rhubarb. You could catch her canning any and all fruits that she and Jerry could get their hands on. At times, she had a hard time keeping her canned fruit inventory because those ornery Ripp boys would sneak down to the cellar and enjoy canned peaches or apples. One day she finally had enough and took a firecracker out of the boys’ dresser drawer, lit it, threw it in the hole, and closed the door. She had no problem with inventory after that until her grandkids discovered her delicious canned goods. Kay truly had a heart for teaching and service. She served as 4-H leader for Buffalo County Extension devoting thousands of hours to the 4-H youth teaching them sewing and baking. She was also very active in the UNL Extension Majors Neighborhood, Kearney Quilt Guild, and she along with a group of her friends pioneered the Ravenna Quilt Guild where she served as President in 2001. Kay found so much joy in teaching others how to sew. Her daughters, nieces and grandchildren spent many hours learning from her and sharing the love for quilting. Above all, Kay was strong and devoted to her faith. Whenever she spoke of tough times throughout her life, she always said she would have never made it through without God by her side. She was a devoted servant of the Catholic Church. Kay served on the board for the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) at the local, state, and national levels. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Prairie Center Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and served as Province Director for Nebraska’s three Dioceses. She was very passionate about giving her time to the Church, loving the travel and friends made throughout the years. Kay spent half a century studying the Bible and forming unbreakable bonds with her support group of closest friends; Joan, Evelyn, Deb, and Wilma. They spent many hours laughing together, crying together, and supporting each other through all of life’s celebrations and sorrows. Kay was devoted to her family, a friend to all, and the most remarkable person. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, offered a helping hand wherever she went, and could light up a room with her smile. Survivors include her children and their families.
