Description	:	Catherie Peterson was born 6 Jan 1857 in Aalborg, Denmark. She was second of five children born to Peder Thomsen and Marie Jensdatter. She immigrated to America as a young girl of 11 in 1868. She spoke only Danish. Five years later, in 1868 at the age of 16, she married Nels Sorensen Trannum. Nels also had immigrated from Denmark the same year as Catherine. The family storys say Catherine and Nels marriage was prearranged by their families in Denmark. She was second of five children born to Peder Thomsen and Marie Jensdatter. She immigrated to America as a young girl of 11 in 1868. She spoke only Danish. Five years later, in 1868 at the age of 16, she married Nels Sorensen Trannum. Nels also had immigrated from Denmark the same year as Catherine. The family storys say Catherine and Nels marriage was prearranged by their families in Denmark. Together Catherine and Nels had nine children. Eight girls and one boy, Peter, who died as a small child. Two girls died as infants, and daughter Martha died at age 12. Five girls filled their home with love and laughter. They were a close family and enjoyed each others company in all things. They worked together and played together. Catherine expected the girls to help keep the home tidy and the garden free of weeds. She encouraged them to dress well and present themselves beautifully to the world. She also taught them to have fun and laugh and enjoy life. Catherine crocheted beautiful table cloths (many have survived her) and dresser scarves, did needlework, sewed her childrens dresses and loved to garden and grow flowers. She lined the side of her home with hollyhocks. One of the treasures she brought with her from Denmark was an enamel bowl from her grandmother. It hung on her back porch until her daughter Elwenna married, then she gave it to her. That bowl washed feet, scrubbed floors, and was part of life. It has since been used by Catherine's granddaughter Hilda and is now hung on the wall in her great great grandson's home. Catherine was a strong, proud woman. She had a sweet voice and would sing songs to her grandchildren in Danish. She was a good cook and kept a tidy home. She taught her daughters to sew, and to be ladies. She was survived by her sweetheart husband, Nels Sorensen Trannum. Five daughters: Mary Marie, Anna Christine, Drea, Elwenna, and Carrie. As well as eleven grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by 2 infant daughters, son Peter, Daughter Martha, and granddaughter Enid.
