Description	:	Nels Sorensen Trannum was born in Aalborg, Denmark on the 4th of February 1854 to Saaren Pedersen and Anne Jensdatter. Nels came to America the the age of 15 in 1868. He spoke no english. He came to Fremont, Nebraska. He was a carpenter and earned a good living with his hands. Five years after immigrating he married Catherine Peterson in 1873. He was 19, she was 16. Family storys say Catherine was an arranged marriage from Nels family back home. Together Nels and Catherine made a home and nine children were born to them. Eight girls... He came to Fremont, Nebraska. He was a carpenter and earned a good living with his hands. Five years after immigrating he married Catherine Peterson in 1873. He was 19, she was 16. Family storys say Catherine was an arranged marriage from Nels family back home. Together Nels and Catherine made a home and nine children were born to them. Eight girls and one boy, Peter who died as a small child. Only 5 children lived to become adults. Two girls died as infants, and Martha died at age 12. Mary Marie, Anna Christine, Drea, Elwenna, and Carrie. Nels moved his family to Adrian, Missouri and then back to David City, Nebraska in 1900. In David City he built a beautiful home and filled it with furniture he built. The home was always filled with family as the girls married and brought home grandchildren. Catherine had a huge garden and lined the side of the house with hollyhocks. Nels loved his girls. He encouraged them to be ladies. He worked hard and provide well for his family. Vores familie! Nels joined the Baptist church in 1915 and was active until his death. He always said grace on the food in Danish. (his granddaughter Hilda could recite that prayer into her 70's as she heard it so often as a child) He was a kind, gentle man. He had a passion for life and family. Whatever inspired him to leave his home country and move thousands of miles across the ocean to Nebraska fired him to endure the trials he encountered in life. He survived the lose of four children, the grasshopper scourge in Saunders County, the loss of his wife and so much more. He leaves a strong legacy to his family.
