Graves, mother of Mrs. George S. Miller and pioneer resident of Carroll county, died at her home, 616 North Carroll street, Saturday morning, June 8, at 9:40 o'clock, following an illness since early April. When Mrs. Graves became ill at that time she overcame the trouble, and was able to be up and around the house for a week or longer. Again illness fastened itself upon her and for the last three weeks of her life she was bedfast, suffering with a general wearing out of her body, coupled with a heart disorder. A trained nurse aided in caring for her. Mrs. Graves has long been identified as one of the good mothers of this community. Since 1909, when the family moved to Carroll, she was an active and influential member of the Methodist church. She had a large following of friends both young and old being drawn to her by her pleasant, sincere manner. Mrs. Graves, as Catherine Melvina Ramsey, daughter of Robert and Mary Ramsey, was born at Cassville, Wis., May 16, 1848. She received her education in the Cassville schools and grew to young womanhood in her home town. Following her marriage to John Joseph Graves, December 6, 1871, at Glen Haven, Wis., the young people came to Iowa, locating on their farm in Pleasant Valley township, Carroll county. Seven children were born to them: Eugene Robert, Cora Mae, Ethel Inez, John Alvin, Sadie K, Earl Gerden, and Harrison Morton, three of whom, Cora Mae, John Alvin, and Earl Gerden, preceded their mother in death. Mr. Graves passed away March 23, 1924, after a lingering illness. One of the greatest pleasures in the life of Mrs. Graves during the later years was the celebration of her golden wedding anniversary, December 6, 1921. It was always pleasure to both Mr. and Mrs. Graves to have family gatherings, and this day brought much joy to them. As a young girl Mrs. Graves unitd with the Methodist church, and lived a life rich in its teachings. Surviving are the four children: Eugene and Harrison of Glidden, Mrs. Ethel Lathrop of Boone and Mrs. George S. Miller of this city; a sister, Mrs. M.J. Pratt of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon June 11, 1929, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Arthur M. Eastman, and burial was made in the city cemetery. Six grandsons acted as pall bearers. All of the children were at home called by their mother's fatal illness. The following relatives also attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs Ell Obiatt, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stumbo, Woodward; Mr. and Mrs. Will Lathrop and family, Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Graves, Mrs. Margaret Graves and children, Gurdon and Bertha June, Mrs. Julia Graves and children, Warren and Lila, Glidden.
