He was under the doctors and nurses care for two and a half months and within that time underwent an operation of a serious nature. Mr. Graves was born in Lafayette county, Wis., August 12, 1848, and would have been 76 years old on his next birthday. He was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Melvina Ramsey at Glen Haven, Wis., December 6, 1871. They arrived in Carroll four days afterwards and have since made their home in this county. Their large farm in Pleasant Valley township where they located and which Mr. Graves owned at the time of his death, has been the scene of many a happy family gathering. Fifteen years ago Mr. Graves retired from active farm work and located at 616 North Carroll street, which has since been the family home. Although Mr. Graves retired from farm work he kept himself busily employed, working for the pleasure it brought him as his large holdings in land made it unnecessary for him to take any kind of employment. Shortly before his illness he suffered a severe injury to his eye which wore heavily upon his nervous system. Until that time Mr. Graves was never idle. He was a staunch member of the Methodist church and for a number of years was a member of the church board. Mr. and Mrs. Graves were the parents of seven children: Eugene, Cora, Ethel, Alva, Sadie, Earl, and Harry. The children who, with their mother, survive are: Eugene of Glidden; Mrs. Ethel Lathrop, of Boone; Mrs. Sadie Miller of Carroll; and Harry who resides on the old homestead in Pleasant Valley. Mr. Graves was a man whom it was a pleasure to come in contact with. He was always cheerful and pleasant and enjoyed the company and friendship of his friends. He especially enjoyed a large home gathering, when all the children and their families could spend a day with him and Mrs. Graves. In December, 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Graves celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and the day was a delightful one to the entire family. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Ellas Handy officiating. Burial was made in the Carroll cemetery.
