Catherine died at Shelbina, Mo on January 29, 1875 where the couple had moved the year before. Chester K. and Catherine Cowling Cotton reared four children, Chester, William B, Mary E and Catherine. Mary Cotton married Robert Armstrong; Catherine married John Dickerson. William B. Cotton died in 1870; Catherine Cotton Dickerson in 1874. Cotton, died at the residence of her son, Chester Cotton, of Shelbina, on the morning of the 29th ult. She was buried at Shelbyville on Sunday following, Rev. W. W. McMurry of the M.E. Church South, delivering a discourse on the occasion. She was married 45 years since, moved to Missouri from Baltimore in 1839, had been a resident of Shelbina one year, for three years was an invalid, and died at the ripe age of 73 years, honored for the most estimable family she had reared, for an earnest membership of 50 years in the Methodist church and for many virtues.
