Born November 18th, 1802; died October 3, 1890, aged nearly 88 years. ~~~~~~ There were several men named Chester Cotton. The History of Shelby County (p. 966) included a biographical sketch of the Chester Cotton who was born June 1, 1833 in Baltimore Md. The sketch included the following information about Chester Cotton's father and paternal grandfather. Chester K. Cotton--father of Chester Cotton: Chester K. Cotton, "was a native of Connecticut, born at East Hartford, November 18, 1802. ...he was reared at Hartford, Conn., and learned the gilder's trade. He subsequently went to New York, where he worked four years. In 1828 he went to Pittsburg, where he resided three years and was married (to Catherine T. Cowling) He then went to Baltimore, Md. and was engaged in gilding looking-glass frames until 1837 when he came to Missouri. In this state, he engaged in general merchandising at Hannibal, and two years later removed to Shelbyville, where he was engaged in merchandising for about 16 years, being one of the pioneer merchants of that place. Since then he has been engaged in no active business.....Mr. Cotton was quite successful in business, and had one of the largest houses in the county. In 1855 he retired and after that his sons carried on the business. In 1858 he was elected County Treasurer and held the offive for over four years..." According to the sketch, Chester K. Cotton married Catherine Cowling in Pittsburg(h) on March 22, 1830. Catherine died at Shelbina, Mo on January 29, 1875 where the couple had moved the year before. Chester K. and Catherine Cowling Cotton reared four children, Chester, William B, Mary E and Catherine. Mary Cotton married Robert Armstrong; Catherine married John Dickerson. William B. Cotton died in 1870; Catherine Cotton Dickerson in 1874. Chester K. Cotton was a member of the M.E. Church South. From Shelbyville. The funeral of the venerable C. K. Cotton took place on Sunday at 11 o'clock from the Methodist church, and was largely attended by our citizens and many from the home of deceased, Shelbina. Rev. Robert White preached the discourse, and dwelt tenderly at times on the life of the good man. Rev. S. J. Martin, our Presbyterian minister, read the first lesson, Rev. W. B. Beagle the second, and Rev. Milam followed the sermon with a few remarks. The pulpit and railing were draped in black. "I'm the resurrection and the life." This venerable man fell asleep at the residence of his son, Chester Cotton, in Shelbina, Friday, October 3rd, 1890, being full of years and having the respect of all. He was born at East Hartford Connecticut, November 4th, 1802. His father, Allan Cotton, was a sea captain, and was lost at sea. Deceased learned the gilder's trade, and worked at it in New York City, at Pittsburg, Pa., and in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1837 he came to Hannibal and two years later to Shelbyville, Mo. At the latter place he engaged in merchandising, which business he continued until 1855, when he turned the business over to his sons, Win. B. and Chester. He married in Pittsburg about 1830, and had four children, two of whom survive him, viz: Chester Cotton, in business here, and Mrs. Armstrong. Deceased was treasurer of this county from 1858 to 1862, and we have been told, at some time postmaster at Shelbyville. He was an active and successful merchant, and a man whose integrity no man questioned. During the past 20 years of his life he has been quiet and retiring. His health has generally, until the past few years, been good, and he lived at peace with himself and all mankind, waiting patiently until his end come. For fifty years he has been a member of the M. E. church, South, and he has the reputation of a christian gentleman, his remains were laid at rest in the Odd Fellow's cemetery, in Shelbyville. This time It was one of the "Patriarchs of Isreal," the venerable C. K. Cotton, who departed this life, October 3rd, 1890 aged nearly 88 years. Tuesday morning he arose as usual and after a while complained of not feeling so well as usual and returned to his bed. In a short time became unconscious and remained so until Friday morning when he died. He was born in East Hartford, Connecticut, November. 4th (sic), 1802. In the early part of his life he learned the gilders trade and worked at it in various large cities. In 1837 be came to Missouri, stopping in Hannibal where he was in business for two years. He then, in 1839, came to Shelby county, going to merchandising in Shelbyville. He was actively engaged in the business until 1865, when he retired, his sons, Wm. B. and Chester, succeeding him. In 1858 be was elected treasurer of this county, which office be held until 1862. He was appointed postmaster of Shelbyville, under Buchanan's administration and held the office for several years. About 1830 he was married in Pittsburgh to a Miss Cowland and four children resulted from the union, two of whom, Mrs. Armstrong and Chester, survive him. Fifty years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, south, and has lived an earnest christian life. His funeral took place Sunday morning at Shelbyville from the M. E. church, south, and many citizens from this place joined in paying the last tribute of respect to the departed. Rev. White preached the funeral discourse and dwelt tenderly on the life of the good man. Revs. Martin, Beagle and Milan were also present and took part in the rites, after which his remains ware laid to rest in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
