Obituary transcribed by Bart Hamlett Death of Mrs Thomas Parsons Passed Away At The Ripe Age Of 82 Years, 11 Months And 19 Days Catherine Romig was born in a small valley of the Allegany Mountains, in Union County, Pennsylvania on May 2, 1834. She received a fair education for that time and grew to womanhood in the place of her birth. The family moved to Iowa in June 1855, the trip being made overland in a wagon and took nine weeks to accomplish. Two incidents of the journey are worthy of note. Passing through what is now Chicago only 3 buildings were there at that time. Also because of the crowded condition of the wagon the occupants had to take turns at walking, except Catherine, who on her own choice walked the whole way—a feat worthy of a trained soldier. In Iowa the family settled near Elkport, Clayton County. Here on November 23, 1855 the subject of this sketch was married to Thomas Parsons whom she had known in the old Pennsylvania home. To them came nine children, one of whom, John Henry, died in infancy on July 13, 1864. The others remain with her husband to mourn the departure of a faithful, loving wife and mother. They are are Morgan A., of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Jane Steele, of Edgewood, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Aunger, of Mott, North Dakota; Mrs Charlotte Butts, of Prattsburg, New York; Mrs. Lucinda Hatfield, of Armour, South Dakota; Mrs. Clara Ann Galer, of Springfield , South Daktota; Mrs. Emma Galer, of Mederville, Iowa; and Thomas, of Watrous, North Dakota. There also remain forty one grand children and nineteen great grand children. She also leaves four brothers, Henry Romig of Mapleton, Iowa; John Romig who lives in Oregon; Daniel Romig, of Manchester, Iowa; and Jacob Romig, of Doon, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Christian Weir, of Enid, Oklahoma. Mrs. Parsons has been a Christian from her girlhood. She was early in life baptized in the Lutheran Church but after coming west in November 1865, she and her husband united with the Evangelical Association Church and continued until the organization near them disbanded. On April 27, 1884, they became members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Asbury being received by the Rev. L.L. Lockard and in the communion they have remained. The home for nearly all her married life was located on land that Mr. Parsons bought from the government eight miles north east of Edgewood, near Littleport; but five years ago they sold this home and moved to Edgewood, where on the morning of April 21st, Mrs. Parsons quietly slipped away from this world to the betterland at the ripe age of 82 years, 11 months and 19 days—just 11 days less than 83 years. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning at ten o’clock, Rev. S.C. Bretnall preaching the sermon. A large number of relatives and friends accompanied the remains to the Union cemetery, this side of Littleport, where they were laid to rest.
