Description	:	Cathleen was the daughter of Samuel Calvin and Flora Matilda Coffman Johnson. She was a public school teacher in Greenbrier Co and spent much of her career in one room country schools where, like her husband, she taught up to eight grades at a time. As a teacher she was known for providing extra food, such as a pot of beans cooked on the school's pot belly coal stove, to supplement the often meager lunches of her students. Read More	Cathleen was the daughter of Samuel Calvin and Flora Matilda Coffman Johnson. She was a public school teacher in Greenbrier Co and spent much of her career in one room country schools where, like her husband, she taught up to eight grades at a time. As a teacher she was known for providing extra food, such as a pot of beans cooked on the school's pot belly coal stove, to supplement the often meager lunches of her students. Under a government-sponsored program, she taught weaving in the post-depression error and was featured in a National Geographic article in 1940. She was also well known in church and community circles, to include Sunday School teacher and 4-H Club leader. Among her community duties was the issuing of ration books during WWII. The places she and Sam lived and raised their family included quarters adjacent to the Fry Elementary School classroom on Muddy Creek Mountain; and in rural Asbury WV where they lived in a log cabin. She was a skilled artisan who worked with multiple media, especially in her retirement years. During this time she restored a dozen pump organs and created beautiful pieces of furniture from many different domestic and imported woods. She spent her final years in the company and care of a career missionary daughter in Richmond, KY. Like her husband, she was also a teacher in death, as she willed her body to the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. Her ashes are likewise interred at the Rosewood Mausoleum. Besides the three biologic children she and Sam raised, they hosted many foster children in their home and adopted one such child. Like Sam, Cathleen left a permanent legacy of goodness and greatness among the citizens of Greenbrier County and West Virginia; and, through their children and grandchildren, including more career missionaries, a legacy to the world.
